At nine o'clock in the morning on Derby Day on Tyneside, the queue of Newcastle United
00:08
supporters waiting to get on buses to the Stadium of Light stretched around the gallaghered
00:13
end of the stadium. Once under the Milburn stand, they were handed out free scarves provided
00:20
to them by the club. They then waited patiently as their turn approached to get on the many
00:26
buses that were provided for them. There was a sea of black and white just waiting to descend
00:35
on the red and white areas of Wearside. The buses soon filled up and the Newcastle supporters
00:42
were soon setting off on the short journey to the Stadium of Light. On Wearside, the
00:58
crowds of red and white were slowly building to welcome both the Newcastle supporters and
01:05
both sets of players to the Stadium of Light. There was a sense of anticipation in the air.
01:11
Could Sunderland pull off a cup upset against their North East rivals? The Sunderland team
01:17
coach then arrived with all of the surrounding supporters, giving their players a hero's
01:23
welcome. The Black Cats would be without midfielder Patrick Roberts, but still had a line-up that
01:29
boasted Jack Clarke, Joe Bellingham and Pierre Ecqua, alongside local talents such as Anthony
01:36
Patterson and Dan Neal. There was a less than friendly welcome, however, for the Newcastle
01:42
United players coach as it arrived soon after. In their line-up, the likes of Bruno Gimaraes,
01:50
Joel Inton, Miguel Almiron and Alexander Izak were the star names on show, hoping to give
01:56
the Magpies a victory to remember. With the players all in the Stadium, the remainder
02:03
of the Newcastle United supporters began to arrive and march up towards their end of the
02:09
ground. As with their players, they were met with a hostile atmosphere from the Sunderland
02:15
supporters who were kept well away from them. And with everything set, 90 minutes of intense
02:22
action was to follow. The calm after the storm here at the Stadium of Light, Newcastle United
02:39
ran out as 3-0 victors with Alexander Izak scoring a brace after Dan Ballard's own goal.
02:45
The atmosphere was hostile and raucous, but Eddie Howe's side dealt with it and ultimately
02:51
showed their class against their championship opponents. Who knows when the two sides will
02:58
next meet, but for now, it is the black and white that have the bragging rights in the
03:03
North East.
