Japan Earthquake Casualties Rise, Rescue Operations Face Obstacles
  • 4 months ago
A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto peninsula region of Japan on New Year's Day, causing widespread damage. As of Friday, the death toll had risen to 92 people killed. Nearly 250 people remain missing. Rescuers are racing against time to find survivors, as the critical 72-hour period since the quake ended without finding many survivors. Over 4,600 troops are involved in search and relief efforts but access is difficult due to landslides and damaged roads from the quake and subsequent aftershocks.
