Travel Guide: Day trips from Glasgow

Now that the holidays are over and we’ve entered a quiet point in the New Year, it seems life has calmed down a bit. Reeling from a busy few weeks it would be natural to want to escape the city for a bit of a breather.

Well, here are some of the best towns, villages and castles easily accessible from Glasgow either by car, train or bus that may spark inspiration for a day trip.

First we have Wemyss Bay, hailed the gateway to the Isle of Bute. Located on the coast of the Firth of Clyde in Inverclyde, there is plenty to do and see here.

Its train station was recently voted best in the nation because of its aesthetic glass ceiling and wood carved panel interior, while there is a selection of shops and eateries in the town centre.

Next up we have Oban, a two hour drive away from the city centre - though one filled with an abundance of scenery - and a town that’s definitely worth the visit.

There are plenty of viewpoints overlooking the Firth of Lorn, there are also plenty of castles, gardens and beaches to explore.

Next on the list is Stirling Castle, around 40 minutes away by train or car. There is regular transport to the small city from Glasgow Queen Street Station everyday.

The castle is brimming with history, it was home to Mary Queen of Scots, and was the centre point for the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Visually it is stunning, considered one of the most important sanctuaries of architecture in Scotland. Not to mention its terrific views.

And finally, there is the Fife coastal village and former royal burgh Culross which sits at the edge of the Firth of Forth.

If you are a fan of the Scottish-made TV show Outlander you may even recognise some spots as it was used as a filming location on multiple occasions.

The streets are charming and peaceful and the village features a church and cafes.
