00:03 Heavy duty trucks are built for hard work,

00:10 but increasingly automakers are offering trucks

00:12 like this one that are meant for playing hard as well.

00:16 This is a 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD ZR2.

00:21 It's a mouthful, but it's that last part, ZR2,

00:26 that makes this as much of a toy as it is a tool.

00:34 The ZR2 package includes 35 inch Goodyear mud terrain tires,

00:39 beefier front skid plates,

00:41 an electronic locking rear differential,

00:43 a 1.5 inch suspension lift,

00:46 and the really cool bit, spool valve dampers.

00:49 These dampers provide more consistent performance

00:52 when the shocks heat up during off-road driving.

00:56 All Silverados got a refresh for 2024,

00:59 and while you wouldn't call this truck handsome,

01:02 it looks a lot better than the version that came before it.

01:05 The real upgrade though is in the interior

01:08 with big, crisp, clear screens

01:11 and nicely arranged controls that are easy to use.

01:15 You can get a ZR2 with either

01:18 the 6.6 liter 401 horsepower gas V8,

01:22 or an optional Duramax diesel

01:25 that makes 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.

01:30 This one has that diesel powertrain

01:32 combined with a 10-speed automatic.

01:35 And despite the fact that it weighs 8,266 pounds,

01:39 it's good for 6.6 seconds to 60 miles per hour.

01:43 It is a ride.

01:45 The off-road package does reduce

01:48 its hauling capability a bit,

01:51 but as a heavy-duty truck,

01:52 this can still tow massive amounts of weight.

01:55 It can tow up to 18,500 pounds,

01:58 and you can put about 3,300 pounds in the bed.

02:01 That's less than non-ZR2 versions

02:03 of Chevy's heavy-duty truck.

02:05 It's also a bit less than the chief competitor,

02:08 the Ford F-250 Tremor.

02:10 This truck is trying to do so many different things well,

02:15 and it's mostly succeeding.

02:16 The Duramax diesel and the 10-speed automatic

02:19 feel great in any conditions.

02:22 And with a load in the bed

02:23 or a trailer hooked up out back,

02:25 it does feel very confident on the road.

02:28 The one complaint is with the ride quality.

02:31 It can be a little bit jittery on paved roads.

02:33 With the ZR2, Chevy has built a truck

02:37 that's just as capable working hard

02:40 or playing hard in the dirt.

02:41 This is a great addition

02:43 to the off-road heavy-duty truck segment.
