00:00 Welcome to the press conference ahead of tomorrow's game with AC Milan.
00:03 We'll start with Keith Downey.
00:04 If you have a question, please get my attention and we'll try and come to you within the 15 minutes.
00:08 Thank you.
00:08 Keith.
00:09 Hi, Eddie, nice to see you.
00:10 You too, Keith.
00:11 I know group qualification is out of your hands tomorrow night,
00:17 but what an occasion this could be at St James' Park if you win the match.
00:23 Yeah, I think we're very positive going into the game.
00:27 I think, as you say, it's got all the hallmarks of being a very special night.
00:34 I think all we can do, quite predictably, is try and win the game
00:38 and try and give our best performance and we'll give everything to try and do that.
00:42 Your home form has obviously been a lot different to your away form of late,
00:47 so I guess you'll be pleased, relieved that this is at home.
00:51 Could the supporters be the extra player for you and help get you over the line?
00:56 Well, they have been for us this season, for sure.
00:59 We're going to need every voice, every person can make a difference tomorrow.
01:03 I think it's one of those nights for us where we need to create the atmosphere
01:08 that has been befitting, really, of our home form.
01:11 The supporters have never let us down at home, I think they've been incredible.
01:15 They've really driven us on, especially when there's been some tight games
01:18 and we've been working as hard as we do in the matches.
01:21 They've given us the ability to keep going and we're going to need that tomorrow.
01:26 I feel like a broken record asking you about injuries,
01:29 but our cameras were at the training session this morning, obviously with just a one-man...
01:34 What did you see, Keith?
01:36 I saw some players walking around and then doing a few stretches.
01:40 So it probably wasn't a training session.
01:42 There was no Anthony Gordon, no Martin De Bravka and no Sean Longstaff.
01:46 Should we read anything into that?
01:49 Yes and no, you can read whatever you want into it.
01:51 We're two days after a game, so we're obviously trying to manage players,
02:00 and we'll see who's fit for tomorrow.
02:03 I'm just giving you nothing there, am I?
02:05 Eddie, famously Newcastle against Feyenoord under Bobby Robson,
02:11 got through in the last game, can you use that game as a bit of history to inspire for this one?
02:17 Yeah, anything that helps us.
02:20 I think being under lights here is always very special.
02:23 Under lights, Champions League, with something to play for and with everything to gain.
02:28 I think that's got to be our way of looking at it.
02:31 I think before the Paris game we would have definitely taken this position.
02:37 Of course it could have been very different, but we are where we are and the position that we're in.
02:43 I think we're looking forward to trying to improve in our last two performances,
02:47 so I think the lads are very focused.
02:49 On the goalkeepers, obviously Nick Pope's out now, but you've still got three keepers,
02:53 is there a chance you could rotate goalkeeper, or is it three players pushing for that one position?
02:59 It's not really a position I want to rotate, to be honest.
03:04 I think every team benefits from having a settled goalkeeper, a settled back four.
03:08 That's always been my way of working with my defensive structure.
03:13 But, yeah, let's see what tomorrow brings.
03:16 Just finally, I've heard some observers say it wouldn't be a bad thing if Newcastle went out of Europe.
03:25 I know you're very positive, you're not going to subscribe to anything like that, I guess?
03:29 No, not at all. We're desperate to stay in this competition, first and foremost,
03:33 and if we can't then stay involved in Europe.
03:35 We worked so hard to get into this position in the first place,
03:42 we gave everything last year to try and achieve European football,
03:45 we don't want to give it away lightly.
03:47 Our intention on behalf of me, the players, the coaching staff,
03:50 is to do everything we can to try and win the match.
03:52 Chris Wolff.
03:54 You mentioned that before Paris you were taking this position,
03:58 but at the start of the group stage, when you were the fourth seeds going into what everyone's called the 'group of death',
04:03 if you'd been given the opportunity going into the final game to go through, would you have taken that at that stage?
04:07 I think probably. I think to be here with some kind of destiny in our hands,
04:15 maybe not the destiny that we wanted, but European football still in our hands.
04:19 I don't want to be perceived to be negative, but I think we'd have taken that,
04:24 and I think that's how we have to think now anyway, I don't think thinking anything other is helpful.
04:28 We can control what we can control, we can control our performance tomorrow,
04:34 we can give everything we can to try and win.
04:36 We respect our opponents, I think they're a very good team,
04:39 and they showed us that in Milan.
04:42 I actually thought we played really well, I thought they played really well too,
04:46 and it was quite an open game with lots of chances.
04:49 In terms of the team, that was obviously your first game in the Champions League this season,
04:53 how do you think the team has come on since then and learned in this competition?
04:56 Obviously you've had a lot of injuries, but in terms of progressing into the tournament?
05:00 Maybe the team and the squad hasn't progressed in the way that we would have wanted,
05:04 purely from the fact that we haven't seen a lot of the players since.
05:06 But I say time and time again, we're not moaning about the situation,
05:11 we face the situation that we've been in, I think, strongly, and that's all we can do.
05:17 It was great to have two players back on Saturday that gave us a huge lift,
05:22 and their performances when they came on gave us a huge lift.
05:24 So, yeah, we're going into the game confident.
05:27 Just finally on that front, have you got any other players
05:29 who could be back for this match other than the ones that were mentioned before?
05:32 I'm not sure.
05:37 Luke Edwards.
05:39 How have you enjoyed the Champions League?
05:43 I've really enjoyed the Champions League,
05:46 but there is a slight but because I don't think we've been able to maybe have the freedom
05:52 to attack the competition like we would have liked to have done.
05:55 So I'm not going to go back to the subject we just spoke about,
06:00 but I think that's my only feeling that I'm left with, which is negative.
06:04 I think the tournament itself is special,
06:07 the places we've been have been incredible, the stadiums, the atmospheres,
06:11 the experiences we've had here at home have also been memorable.
06:15 So we have one more game, and we want to try and make this as memorable as possible.
06:21 What would be your message to the fans coming to the ground tonight?
06:23 I think to make it a magical European night,
06:30 and they can only do so much, we have to do our bit to make it that.
06:34 And I know I've got a feeling I know what you're going to say,
06:37 but you've been heavily linked with Calvin Phillips' loan move,
06:39 there's even suggestions that it's all but done.
06:42 Is there anything you can say on that?
06:43 That is incorrect.
06:45 OK, Greg Haup and then Damian Spellman.
06:49 Eddie, is there almost a feeling that you've got two teams at the moment,
06:52 the team away from home, who look depleted, who look injured,
06:56 in a depleted number, but the team at home,
06:59 who almost look as if the injuries are a strength in a way,
07:02 you know, that collective resolve, and there's a newfound spirit
07:06 that almost look energised at St James'.
07:07 Do you feel as if you've got two different teams at the moment?
07:09 No, I don't feel that way.
07:12 I think that might have looked that way the last couple of games for sure.
07:18 And we have to take responsibility for that.
07:20 I think the last two games have happened for different reasons,
07:24 I won't go into that now because I want to focus on what's ahead.
07:26 But I don't doubt the character of the players that we've got.
07:30 The character is there, the spirit's there,
07:33 the intention is there to do well away from home.
07:35 But that can wait for another day, that worry.
07:39 Tomorrow we just have to focus on a home form and a performance against Milan.
07:43 Last one, a direct question, is Martin De Bravica fit for tomorrow?
07:47 That is slightly unclear.
07:49 Hi, Eddie.
07:51 Eddie, given the fact that the club hasn't played in this competition for a long time,
07:56 or Europe at all for a long time, the group you were drawn into,
07:59 and the problems you've had, how big an achievement would it be to get out of this group?
08:04 Yeah, I think it would be an incredible achievement if we can do it.
08:08 There's so many twists and turns that could happen that we can't transport ourselves
08:15 there, all we can look to do is try and win the game.
08:18 I know that sounds a little bit dull for your headlines,
08:22 but it is the reality of where we are, so we have to get our focus right.
08:29 We can't be distracted by what's happening elsewhere.
08:32 We just have to perform as well as we can.
08:34 Jimmy, right in the back, please.
08:36 Italian or English?
08:43 Italian.
08:44 Italian.
09:09 Yeah, I think Milan watched a lot of football in the preparation for this game,
09:14 and I think they're a very dangerous team, and I felt that before the first game.
09:19 I think having that game was a real benefit for us because
09:22 I think we learned a lot about ourselves in that first match, but also about Milan.
09:28 So I respect the coach, who's done a very, very good job, and they've got some top players.
09:34 So, yeah, Ibrahimovic, he can't play, thankfully, tomorrow,
09:39 so we'll just focus on the team that we're going to face.
09:42 Hi Eddie, how hungry are you and the players to stay in European football?
09:55 As hungry as you can be.
10:01 We're fiercely determined to try and go through in the Champions League, first and foremost,
10:07 and we want to keep a positive feeling and positive momentum with our season.
10:12 Every part of us wants to do that at the Premier League.
10:17 Wait until we play Fulham, so we're looking forward to this test.
10:22 You were probably 90 seconds away from having your destiny in your own hands.
10:25 Can you use that sense of injustice tomorrow night?
10:29 I don't think it's relevant on our minds at the moment.
10:32 I think what's relevant is AC Milan and getting, as I said, our tactical plan right
10:37 for a difficult team to play against.
10:41 And then, of course, closer to the game, we might look at one or two things psychologically and
10:47 try and help the players in any way we can.
10:50 And do you think, is there an anger amongst the players,
10:54 or how is their mood after the last two games?
10:56 Is there a desire to kind of put things right, maybe?
11:00 Yeah, I don't sense anger.
11:01 I think definitely there's a resolve, there's a commitment to try and perform better than the last two.
11:09 But I think very quickly, as I said, after the Tottenham game, we had to put those games away,
11:15 because it wasn't helpful looking back.
11:17 It's all about the future now.
11:19 And then Mark Douglas.
11:22 Hi, Eddie.
11:23 There's been a lot of talk over the course of the last couple of games, Eddie,
11:27 about fatigue and the amount of injuries and whether it's everything piling on top of each other.
11:33 Does it help in some ways that this is, if you like, a one-off game now?
11:37 It's a very simple equation.
11:39 You've got to win the game.
11:41 So in some ways, does that help the players that there's a real clarity there about what they've got to do,
11:46 and it is a one-off thing?
11:47 Yeah, I mean, it depends.
11:51 Are you looking at every game really as a one-off thing?
11:54 But of course, this is a cup competition, and this is the last game of the group stage.
12:00 So I think we'll have finality on where we are.
12:05 So I think that fatigue's a difficult thing.
12:09 That's been well documented, and the amount of games and the amount of injuries we've had,
12:13 we've tried to stay away from that as best we can.
12:14 We've just tried to focus on playing and keep our minds relatively free from things
12:19 we shouldn't really be talking about.
12:21 The players have done very well to handle that.
12:24 Yes, our last two performances haven't been where we want them to be,
12:27 but we've got to come out all guns blazing tomorrow.
12:31 Eddie, there's been a bit of talk about Kieran Trippier,
12:36 who's obviously probably not had his best two games in the last two.
12:39 You know what a class act he is.
12:40 Presumably, he's been so good in Europe as well,
12:43 presumably you'll back him to get back up to the heights tomorrow.
12:46 Yeah, he's been outstanding, I think, for such a consistent time,
12:51 both in and out of possession.
12:53 When he plays well, our team tends to play much, much better.
12:57 So, he is a key part of what we do in every way.
13:02 So, of course I back him, he's an outstanding individual.
13:05 And Sean Longstaff coming back into the team,
13:08 he's played so well in Europe when he's been fit and been there,
13:11 is he somebody you're considering bringing back in from the start tomorrow?
13:14 Of course he's a consideration, but we have a lot of information to digest,
13:18 not just with him but with Callum as well.
13:20 To making the right decisions for them, the team.
13:24 So, yeah, I've got some big calls to make, thankfully,
13:28 for the first time in a long time.
13:31 Just one, Kieran, behind you, just to finish.
13:33 This one, please, Kieran.
13:34 Hi, Eddie. Has Sandro given you any intel ahead of this game?
13:37 And have you been able to tap into his experience at all,
13:40 even though he's obviously ineligible?
13:42 To a point, yeah.
13:45 Of course, we'll have conversations, but...
13:47 I always prefer to trust my own eyes and what we see,
13:51 as I would for every game, prepare in a structured way.
13:55 But of course, little bits of information that he can give us,
13:58 of course we try to utilise that.
14:00 Thanks, everyone, we have time for Callum Wilson,
14:02 who will be with you very shortly.
14:03 Thank you very much. Thank you.
14:06 Thank you very much. Thank you.
14:09 Sorry about the cough.

24:23 Calum, your interview after the Tottenham game caused a bit of a stir
24:27 with your comments about Pickford and the Tottenham goalkeeper.
24:30 Do you stick by them and assume you won't be mocking AC Milan players
24:33 if you seal qualification tomorrow night?
24:35 No, I mean, I got asked a few questions.
24:39 I didn't intend to offend anybody or mock anybody,
24:42 I just spoke about the situation, handbags and frustration,
24:46 as you do on the pitch, and like I said straight afterwards,
24:49 we're grown men and it's forgotten about.
24:52 Thank you very much.
24:54 OK, thank you very much, everyone.
24:56 Thanks, guys.
