00:00 It is the 101st birth anniversary of Bollywood's legendary superstar Dilip Kumar.
00:07 Dilip Kumar's name goes complementary with many hit movies like Devdas, Mughlaizm,
00:13 Shaheed, Mela, Shakti and many more. Many of you have heard him speak very authentic Urdu,
00:22 but do you know where this fluency came from? Dilip Kumar was born into a Pathan family as
00:29 Muhammad Yusuf Khan and later changed his name to Dilip Kumar. How did this transaction happen?
00:36 In a very old interview from 1970, Dilip Kumar revealed the story behind his industry name.
00:43 Dilip Kumar changed his name in the Bollywood film industry to save himself from his father's
00:49 scolding. Dilip Kumar, that is, Muhammad Yusuf Khan, his father, Lal Gulam Sarwar Ali Khan,
00:57 didn't like films. He was a hardcore hater of movies. Dewan Baseshwar Nath Singh Kapoor was
01:04 really close to Yusuf Khan's father and Baseshwar Nath Singh's son, Prithviraj Kapoor, was already
01:11 working in the film industry. Thus, Lal Gulam Sarwar, Muhammad Yusuf Khan's father, always used
01:18 to complain to Baseshwar Nath about the work Prithviraj Kapoor was doing. His concern was to
01:24 make his friend aware of his young and fit son, who was on the wrong path, according to Lal Gulam
01:30 Sarwar. Muhammad Yusuf Khan was very well aware of all this scenario and he knew his father in detail.
01:37 So, when he started working in the film industry, he knew that this work would make his father upset.
01:45 And thus, to hide his works and films from his father, he decided to change his name.
01:50 There were three options he had. Yusuf Khan, Dilip Kumar and Basudev. He clearly refused the first
01:58 option and told the filmmakers to keep any other one they would like. After two to three months,
02:04 when Muhammad Yusuf Khan saw his name, it was Dilip Kumar, which he later continued
02:10 in the Bollywood film industry.
