00:00 Brazil's 29 political parties are starting plans for next year's municipal elections,
00:04 which will feature new quotas for women and the largest authorized campaign budget in
00:09 the nation's history.
00:10 In Brasilia, our correspondent Brian Meir has more.
00:14 2023 is coming to an end.
00:17 And across Brazil's political spectrum, all eyes are on next year's municipal elections.
00:22 There's 5,568 municipalities in Brazil.
00:27 Every one of them is going to have elections for city councilors and mayors next year.
00:30 And this means dividing up Brazil's massive 5 billion real fund for parties financing
00:37 their candidates in elections.
00:39 A first for next year is that 30% of this funding has to be put towards women candidates.
00:45 That means that all parties must field a certain amount of women candidates and 15% of their
00:50 elected city councilors have to be women.
00:53 There's over a thousand municipalities in Brazil.
00:55 They don't have a single female city councilor.
00:58 So this is going to represent a massive sea change in municipal politics in Brazil.
01:03 Here in Brasilia, the Workers' Party is having its 2024 election planning conference.
01:10 And potential candidates for city councilor and mayor from all across the country are
01:13 here.
01:14 President Lula is going to address them tonight.
01:16 And they're going to work out in a two-day series of workshops strategies for helping
01:21 increase the Workers' Party's participation in the municipal level next year in 2024.
