00:00 Mr. Shankde, looking at a new sun rising in the east, ZPM,
00:06 was that expected?
00:08 Did Sauram Thanga see it coming?
00:13 It was largely expected by the Goman people.
00:17 But Sauram Thanga and his party, the ruling MNF,
00:20 since they are in the position power for only one Trump,
00:26 in Mizoram there has been a funny, rather funny,
00:30 interesting of the fact that every party who rules the state
00:34 will rule for two Trumps, Congress two Trumps, MNF two
00:38 Trumps.
00:38 But then our MNF friends were reluctant to give up this time.
00:43 They said that this is only our first time,
00:45 so there will not be change.
00:46 But then the way I see the results here,
00:49 a landslide victory for ZPM, Zoram People's Movement,
00:55 I think it is the expectation of the people to make a change.
01:00 So we are for the change only.
01:02 So I think this is a good and very healthy, progressive
01:06 attitude of the Mizoram voters here.
01:09 I think we have to accept that.
01:10 Talking about the key issues that Mizoram went to polls with,
01:15 in your opinion, what was it that changed the tide
01:19 in favor of ZPM?
01:22 It is mainly because of the fact that the present ruling
01:26 party, MNF, there is too much of nepotism and corruption
01:30 in the government.
01:32 So I think Mizoram being--
01:34 we are very educated, only a population of 12 lakh,
01:38 we know each and every tricks of the government here.
01:43 So by allotting the government contracts and all,
01:45 so there have been a lot of nepotism
01:47 and people are getting fed up with this.
01:49 So they say that since ZPM is a new political party,
01:53 established only in the year 2019,
01:56 so Mizoram people gracefully, openly have accepted that,
02:01 OK, let's give these guys a few chance.
02:04 So let's see.
02:05 I think we are going in that line only.
02:07 How important, in your opinion, is it for the leaders,
02:13 the political leaders, the ruling class,
02:15 it is important to understand the pulse of the people?
02:17 You say that Mizoram gives two terms,
02:20 and I think two terms is what Telangana also gave KCR.
02:24 But again, he couldn't hit a hat trick.
02:27 Well, see, I have been traveling quite a lot
02:31 during the election time.
02:32 In fact, I'm from the Congress party.
02:36 It is doing very badly today.
02:38 And in fact, I had contested an MP
02:41 as an independent candidate in 2019,
02:44 I mean, ex-candidate of the MP.
02:46 So I'm from Mizoram.
02:48 Yeah, from Mizoram.
02:50 So this time around, what happened
02:52 is that as a Congress star campaigner,
02:55 I've been traveling in almost 13 to 14 constituencies,
02:58 or 40 constituencies.
03:00 And I find that the Mizoram voters are quite smart,
03:04 quite literate.
03:05 And I think they are not being bluffed by the propaganda
03:09 or the high-sounding manifestos.
03:12 They have their own choices clear well before the election.
03:16 Say, when we have about six months,
03:20 I believe that the voters have already decided
03:22 to change the government.
03:24 So I think in Mizoram, like in other progressive states,
03:28 what is the most important for any particular state government
03:31 is to deliver the goods.
03:33 They have to perform.
03:35 So our young generation, let's say,
03:38 I can see from the statistics that 18 to 35 years old,
03:45 the new generation voters and the first-time voters,
03:49 they are about 52% of the total electorates.
03:54 These guys, they are well aware of what is going on
03:57 in the part of India.
03:59 They are fed up with the toll claim
04:02 in the political platforms.
04:04 So they don't believe that.
04:06 So they simply give that, OK, we have Congress,
04:09 who are there ruled for about five terms,
04:13 MNF for three terms.
04:14 So basically, this is a way, if you know,
04:18 that is covering the whole of Mizoram for a change.
04:22 People are not very sure whether ZPM
04:23 will be able to perform better than Congress or MNF.
04:27 But people think that, OK, let's give a chance to ZPM.
04:31 And if it's not good, then we'll throw them out again.
04:34 So the Mizor voters think quite smartly.
04:37 I don't think we are too much influenced
04:39 by the political gimmicks of our leaders.
04:42 Promises and guarantees.
04:43 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:44 We are not being swept away by that, you know?
