COP28: 50 oil companies pledge to almost end methane emissions by 2030

Representing nearly half of global production they pledged to reach near-zero methane emissions and end routine flaring in their operations by 2030.

00:08 but the headline-grabbing pledge that's come out of COP 28

00:12 was dismissed as a smokescreen by environmental groups.

00:15 If it happens, the pledge would trim about a tenth of a degree Celsius from future warming,

00:21 a prominent climate scientist told the Associated Press.

00:24 Meanwhile, the EU pledged to invest 2.3 billion euros

00:29 to move away from fossil fuels.

00:31 Ursula von der Leyen urged the world to switch to renewable energy.

00:35 We must roll out more renewables and we must use less energy

00:41 to produce the products and the services we need.

00:45 And the world's cheapest energy source are renewables.

00:51 Also on Saturday, US climate envoy John Kerry

00:54 joined French President Emmanuel Macron in pushing for more nuclear energy.

00:58 Which doesn't produce greenhouse gas emissions,

01:01 even though accidents are potentially catastrophic.

01:04 And a group of more than 20 nations

01:07 called for a tripling of nuclear energy generated in the world by 2050.
