Muhammad Ali defended his undisputed world heavyweight titles against Alfredo Evangelista

Date: May 16, 1977

Venue: Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland

Ali stance: orthodox

Evangelista stance: orthodox

Muhammad Ali regained the undisputed heavyweight titles when he beat George Foreman in The Rumble in the Jungle in 1974. The fight with Evangelista was to be Ali's ninth defence of the belts. His most notable wins during his second stint as champion were his trilogy win over Joe Frazier in The Thrilla in Manilla and his other trilogy win against Ken Norton. Ali was 35, and had taken a lot of punishment, especially in the bouts with Frazier and Norton.

Alfredo Evangelista was born in Uruguay and spent most of his boxing career in Spain. He turned pro in 1975, and his best wins to date were quick stoppage wins over future European champion and world title challenger Lucien Rodriguez and Rudi Lubbers, who had gone the full 12 rounds with Ali in 1973. In his most recent fight, Evangelista had lost on points to fringe contender Lorenzo Zanon. Evangelista was only 22 when he challenged Ali, so he had youth on his side. All the other advantages lay with the defending champion.
