00:00 Washington DC has seen large protests in recent weeks, both in support of American support
00:07 for Israel and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Today a group of protesters has launched
00:13 a hunger strike right here in front of the White House. They want the US President Joe
00:18 Biden to hear their calls for a permanent ceasefire.
00:22 You know we've seen in the last couple of days what happens when there's a ceasefire,
00:26 how hostages can be returned and political prisoners can be returned and humanitarian
00:33 aid and water and food can come in.
00:37 We know that every day that we do not take action is another life that did not need to
00:41 be lost and it is clear that our actions here, starving ourselves, we are doing so because
00:48 the policies of this White House are starving Palestinians.
00:51 Today Mr Biden has welcomed the extension of the truce and the release of more hostages,
00:56 emphasising the pause has allowed a surge in humanitarian aid to Gaza. But he remains
01:02 under pressure domestically. Members of his party will be planning to join this protest
01:08 later in the week. Some of the protesters are saying they'll refuse food for five days
01:13 unless their calls are heard.
