The Wish songwriter explains how she came up with Chris Pine's signature track, and why it had to be different to classic Disney villain songs.

00:00 Disney has so many great villain songs in its history.
00:03 And this is the thanks, I guess, such a great one
00:06 for "Magnifico."
00:07 But I wondered, how did you want to kind of add
00:10 to that legacy of great villain songs?
00:12 In Disney's past, we've always had very dark,
00:21 ominous songs with villains.
00:26 And with "Magnifico" specifically,
00:31 we talked about his character pretty early on
00:36 and how he was sort of like your next door neighbor dad.
00:41 Like, he was charming and kind and funny and warm.
00:47 But then the more you get to know him behind closed doors,
00:51 he's actually quite narcissistic and controlling.
00:56 And I think those are the scariest villains, the ones
00:59 that you can't see it outwardly.
01:01 And so when we talked about this song, I was like,
01:05 I don't think he should have an outwardly villainous song.
01:10 I think it should start really sort of fun and upbeat
01:15 and match his personality.
01:17 And then as the song goes on, we sort of sonically
01:20 make it darker.
01:22 And then he tries to control it.
01:23 He can't control it.
01:24 He tries.
01:25 And then at the end, he's just fully
01:28 in his sort of narcissistic, ominous, villainous power.
01:33 And yeah, it was really, really fun, fun challenge
01:36 sonically to play with.
