00:01 but I haven't seen said credit card,

00:03 so I'm back down here, back to reality,

00:07 staring back at that guitar.

00:08 Hey, what's up everybody?

00:14 My name is Adrian Casada with Black Pumas.

00:15 I'm here with Guitar.com at my favorite guitar store,

00:18 Austin Vintage Guitars,

00:19 and we're gonna do some guitar shopping today.

00:21 When I walk into a place, I usually,

00:28 my eyeball quickly goes to the Telecasters.

00:30 I'm always looking for unique ones, unique configurations,

00:33 particularly Humbuckers and Telecasters,

00:36 and I've always loved the patina of older ones,

00:39 just the aging of some of the early '70s ones.

00:43 Just love how beautiful the wood looks on those.

00:46 I like nuance.

00:46 I like when you notice something

00:49 that's not super in your face,

00:51 but takes you a second to actually notice it.

00:53 So yeah, there's a little bit of a method to the madness,

00:55 but I typically poke around aimlessly

00:58 for a good 15 minutes before I start

01:02 to settle in on something.

01:03 Kind of more unique things like this,

01:05 where there were limited runs,

01:06 tend to grab my eye just 'cause there are cool collectors.

01:09 Guitars and these sound great.

01:11 I actually have bought two of these Wild Woods.

01:25 I'm happy that I got my start on something like this.

01:28 I remember reading this quote.

01:30 I was studying classical and flamenco,

01:33 and there was a quote by Andres Segovia,

01:35 and I think it was apparently in reference to the Beatles,

01:37 where he said that electrifying the guitar

01:40 robbed it of its poetry.

01:42 And it blew my mind when I was young,

01:44 but I was like, "Damn, that's deep."

01:45 And I'm like, "That stupid electric guitar

01:47 "is the coolest thing of all time."

01:51 (guitar music)

01:54 This would be, if all, probably all the guitars

01:58 in the entire store, this would be what I would use

02:01 live more than anything.

02:02 This would be the sound that I would be attracted to.

02:07 And it's damn sweet.

02:09 These early '70s Telecasters just age so well.

02:11 So we're up here at this other tier

02:20 where every guitar in here already feels

02:22 like it's just melting in your hands.

02:25 It's been played so much.

02:27 They just age so beautifully, the wood, the sound.

02:29 One thing with semi-hollows that I've always

02:32 just really liked is that the resonance you get,

02:35 not only with an amp, but that you can just pick it up

02:37 and play it like this without having to,

02:40 obviously, go through an amp to feel it.

02:42 There's times when you pick up a Telecaster

02:46 or a Stratocaster or something, and you're like,

02:47 "Oh, okay, well, I'll hear the sound when I plug it in."

02:50 But that's one of the things that I've always loved

02:52 about these is you can just pick 'em up wherever,

02:55 and they sound great.

02:56 I really have always loved resonance.

03:08 So you can really use that as another kind of tool

03:12 in the arsenal when you have the feedback

03:15 and the kind of resonance you get going through an amp

03:18 and with some reverb and everything.

03:19 I've always really loved utilizing it as a tool.

03:23 Lately, with Black Pumas, I've actually found myself

03:26 going more to Telecasters, as that resonance

03:29 doesn't always have the effect I like.

03:32 With Pumas, it has to cut through a little bit more

03:35 in a different frequency range,

03:37 and I use really intense fuzz pedals, too, with that.

03:40 So sometimes that doesn't always play nicely

03:42 with F-holes like this.

03:44 But generally, if I was to just pick up a guitar

03:47 and play without an amp, I mean, this is stunning right here.

03:51 Santa would maybe buy me that guitar.

03:58 What do you think, Santa?

03:59 Was I good this year?

04:01 We are in the backroom, basses and amps.

04:04 I do peruse in here quite a bit, for sure.

04:08 To me, the ultimate workhorse amp,

04:10 for what I do personally, I like kind of lower wattage amps

04:14 where you have the option to either play it cleanly

04:19 or kind of hit it a little bit harder

04:21 and make the amp work and get some effect out of that,

04:24 as well, is the Deluxe Reverb.

04:26 It's almost the perfect wattage for what I do

04:30 and what I do live in the studio.

04:31 If I could only have one amp,

04:33 it would absolutely be the Deluxe Reverb.

04:36 Yeah, the Fender is my go-to, I'd say, 99% of the time.

04:42 (upbeat music)

04:44 Biggest musical influence on my life,

04:47 besides rock, was hip hop music,

04:50 and I'm from that generation,

04:51 so I like to lean towards vintage kicks,

04:56 a lot of kind of throwback sport gear,

05:02 and again, dad mode, you know?

05:05 My shirt's tucked in, I could be at my kid's basketball

05:08 tryouts or I could be shopping for guitars

05:10 or I could be at a gig, I like that.
