00:05 - My name is Professor Robert Walsh,

00:32 I'm a professor of solar astrophysics

00:35 at the University of Central Lancashire,

00:37 and that's in Preston, up in the northwest of England.

00:40 And I work with NASA and the European Space Agency

00:43 to try and understand the sun, our closest star.

00:46 And what we've got behind me here

00:48 is a seven meter diameter representation of our sun.

00:53 It's real data from NASA's solar dynamics observatory.

00:58 So everything you see here really has happened on the sun.

01:00 We've taken 10 weeks in the life of the sun

01:03 and squeezed it down to 12 and a half minutes.

01:05 And every time it changes in color,

01:07 every two and a half minutes,

01:08 it's picking a different part of the light from the sun

01:11 that we see in extreme ultraviolet light.

01:14 But this is really what your star looks like

01:16 if you were to go out into space

01:18 and put these extreme ultraviolet spectra on.
