MT Technical Director Frank Markus takes a closer look at two new Audis making their debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show - the A1 Sportback concept and the production-ready 2010 S4.

00:00 Here we have Audi's A1 Sportback concept.

00:09 It's a look at what Audi's upcoming Mini Cooper Fighter is going to look like.

00:13 Under the hood is a hybrid drive train that consists of a 1.4 liter turbo direct fuel

00:17 injected engine that makes 150 horsepower coupled with a 20 kilowatt electric motor

00:22 that can actually be decoupled and run the car by itself in urban centers and so forth.

00:26 That's about 27 extra horsepower too.

00:29 Together that puts about 7.9 seconds zero to 100 kilometer an hour time.

00:33 Not bad considering it also boosts fuel economy by about 30% to a claimed 60 miles per gallon

00:39 on European cycles.

00:40 The car is going into production next year in Belgium for the European market.

00:45 It probably isn't coming to the US.

00:47 A lot of other things won't come to the production version either like the frameless glass and

00:52 probably like the interesting hatchback which opens as a complete hatch or the glass can

00:57 be opened either half independently of the other which is kind of interesting.

01:01 Other cool features, the front end has sequential turn signals only in front.

01:06 LEDs that light from the inboard to the outboard, kind of a cool idea.

01:10 There's also a boom box in the back that detaches and comes out, plays your iPod or something

01:14 with removable speakers.

01:15 Well you won't be able to buy an A1 in the US most likely but this car, the Audi S4 goes

01:21 on sale in September 2009.

01:23 Inside there's the expected aggressive front fascia, side skirts, spoiler in the back and

01:28 some upgrades in the interior.

01:29 What's really interesting is what's under the hood.

01:31 A new 3 liter TSFI engine V6 that uses the latest Eaton supercharger with four lobes

01:37 on the rotors making 11.6 PSI.

01:40 Lets this V6 make 333 horsepower, 324 pound feet of torque.

01:44 You made that to a 7 speed DSG and you end up with a 5.1 second 0 to 60 time shaving

01:50 several precious tenths off the old V8.

01:52 Also avoids the gas guzzler tax which is a big thing these days.

01:56 So this Audi S4 will be competing with obviously the high end AMG C classes and cars of that

02:01 nature and it should be right in the hunt with those things.

02:03 The interesting thing will be to see whether or not they put this 3 liter TSFI engine

02:07 in the S5 because that one still has the V8.
