Telangana’s Tenant Farmers Excluded from Flagship Rythu Bandhu Scheme
  • 6 months ago
In Telangana’s Sangareddy district, several tenant farmers remain completely excluded from the state’s flagship Rythu Bandhu scheme (farmer's investment support scheme), in which the government bears the investment required by the farmer for two crops. The scheme had turned into a major poll plank for Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and helped him win a second term in 2018. However, Rythu Bandhu does not recognize tenant farmers, and the cash-support goes directly to the holder of the land-title.

A field study by the Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) in 2022 found that one in every three farmers in Telangana is a tenant farmer. Lack of support by the state government has pushed many of them into debt and distress and could be driving them towards the extreme step of suicide.
