Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp previews their clash with Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League
Transcript
00:00 Good afternoon, Jürgen.
00:02 Hi.
00:03 How do you close this?
00:09 Is it OK if we have simultaneous translations, so you can wait for the microphone?
00:13 Did it work out, the translation?
00:16 I'm sure about the French, I mean the English.
00:19 Jürgen, before we talk about football,
00:25 obviously two of the clubs have been rivals going through a period,
00:30 Manchester United with Bobby Charlton and Everton with their former chairman,
00:34 obviously the club is patriotic, I just wondered if you'd met either of them
00:38 and whether there was anything you could add in terms of retributing yourself?
00:41 I don't think I can add anything, I never met any of them,
00:46 at least not as far as I know, but being eight years in England now,
00:50 and especially Bobby, I knew him before I arrived here.
00:55 And one of the biggest football personalities definitely,
01:01 in English football, European football, world football,
01:05 and like I said, I can't add anything, but I really feel for the family
01:10 and I hope they're doing OK.
01:17 And with Mr Ken Wright it's similar, the thing I read a little bit recently,
01:25 obviously a massive heart for the city and a massive heart for Everton,
01:33 but the message he gave around the Hillsborough thing,
01:40 all the speech he held that time I heard about,
01:43 "They choose the wrong city and the wrong mums",
01:47 that's a really, really strong message.
01:49 And with all the rivalry with Everton, especially around the games,
01:54 I don't think we have any issues with each other left and right of the games,
02:01 so this just shows how united we are in these moments,
02:06 and that's really big, and he found the absolute right words for it.
02:09 So, same here, my condolences to the family and I hope they are OK.
02:15 Thank you. In terms of the injury situation at the club,
02:19 what's happened with Andy Robertson, has he had surgery?
02:22 How's he recovering? And also Cody Gatwick,
02:24 is he ready to return after missing out on the weekend?
02:27 Yeah, Robbo had surgery and all went well, as good as it could be.
02:34 So recovery starts after he wakes up, I think it happens this morning.
02:37 So that's it, we don't know how long it will take or whatever,
02:45 but the first step is done, that's good.
02:48 Cody's in full training now, since Sunday,
02:50 which means he's available for the squad,
02:54 whatever we do with that we have to see, but that's good as well.
02:58 Who else is out?
03:01 - Bancetich. - Yeah, no, Thiago, not in team training.
03:05 We've got a busy schedule again, because it's midweek, Sunday, midweek,
03:10 Sunday, midweek, Sunday, all the way to the international break as well,
03:14 but at the same time I'd imagine the ambition and the thought is
03:17 that you can carry real momentum into that international break
03:20 with Manchester City on the other side of it as well.
03:22 I didn't think until Sunday yet, to be honest, not at all.
03:29 Toulouse deserves all our respect, it's a really interesting story,
03:35 winning the FA Cup last year, becoming 13th in the league,
03:38 but winning the French Cup, sorry, not the FA Cup, winning the French Cup.
03:42 It's a massive, massive thing obviously,
03:45 and this year a really young team, a really talented team, a football team,
03:51 when you see them playing it's really nice, they have a clear idea.
03:55 But we have to see how they exactly show up here, we don't know,
04:00 against Paris or Lens they played slightly different.
04:03 In all other games you could see that they really want to go for it,
04:10 and got a point against PSG, which is obviously a massive one,
04:16 so we have to make sure that we are really ready.
04:19 And then it's about us, that's very important,
04:22 that we really create an atmosphere through the way we play.
04:26 And if we do that, then as much I'm pretty sure they're looking forward
04:32 to playing at Anfield, the players of Toulouse, coaches and stuff like this,
04:37 but we have to make sure they cannot enjoy it, because that's the plan,
04:40 it's a competition and we are not here for friendly games or whatever,
04:45 we are really here to win football games, and that's what I hope we can show.
04:50 Mike?
04:53 You're well-positioned in your group, two wins from two games so far,
04:57 another victory against Toulouse would put you in a really good position.
05:02 True. Yeah, we should not...
05:06 Actually, it's now not that I think we play at Toulouse or Tholmes,
05:10 we have to win so we can lose at Toulouse or whatever,
05:13 we want to win the football games, and that's the next opportunity we have,
05:18 that would bring us to nine points and keep Toulouse on four points,
05:22 that's all clear, but knowing that changes nothing,
05:25 we have to play to our best, we will make a few changes, not too many maybe,
05:31 but we have to make sure that we are really ready for the competition,
05:35 and the boys so far showed that we are ready for the competition.
05:38 That's what I want to see, and obviously we hope it will go long, long, long,
05:45 in this competition, for that we have to make all the decisive steps,
05:49 and tomorrow night is a very big one.
05:52 Looking back to Saturday and Darwin Junier's role in the second goal,
05:57 when he set up for Mo Salah, is that an indication of how he's progressing,
06:03 in terms of maybe this time last season he would have, we know with his pace,
06:08 he'd get away from people but running in towards goal,
06:11 maybe he would have had a crack at goal and Mo Salah in a better position,
06:15 is that just one of the signs of how he's grown as a player?
06:19 He's just in a really good moment, Darwin is in a really good moment,
06:24 yes, there was some time necessary to adapt to everything -
06:29 new country, new language, new team, all these kind of things, that's long gone.
06:33 He's in the middle of the team, everybody is really happy with him,
06:37 I am very happy with him.
06:39 We had to make a decision before the game, who of the two will start,
06:43 is it Lucio or Darwin?
06:45 Darwin has a little bit of a cramp at the end of the international game,
06:50 so we thought, "OK, maybe we start Lucio."
06:53 We spoke to both, both took it.
06:55 Lucio's job was to create, prepare, do what you can to cause as much trouble as possible,
07:04 and Darwin comes on and kills the game off.
07:07 That was the idea and it worked out really, really well with speed.
07:11 But you could see it was really intense for him, I don't know exactly how long, 20-odd minutes,
07:16 it was really intense, so it was the right decision to do how we did.
07:20 It's always tough for the boys to have these kind of travels before the games,
07:26 but now he's fine for this game, I would say, and for the next game, so that's good.
07:34 And yes, I think he's really happy, and we are really happy with him,
07:44 and that's what I can see at least on the pitch and on the training ground,
07:49 and that's really important. Really good moment for him.
07:52 Anyone else?
07:56 No?
07:59 Love it.
08:00 Thank you.
08:01 Thank you very much.
08:02 Thank you.
