So, have you managed to resist putting your central heating on yet?
00:04
We're out today to find out what the people of Lancashire have
00:07
and also whether they think the government should be doing more to help people with the rising cost of energy.
00:11
This is what they had to say.
00:13
The government should be doing more to help people.
00:15
The government should stand up to these companies, the companies,
00:18
because all the guys in the government are on the board of these companies,
00:21
tell them, if you stand up to them, say, "Look, you can't do this."
00:25
There's people that can't afford to pay anything, can't afford to buy food,
00:30
buy electric, gas heating, everything.
00:33
And I think the government should stand up to them, tell them, "You're not doing it."
00:37
You should have stood up to them, tell them, "You're not doing it."
00:39
I think we should have done.
00:41
If that had been Maggie Parcher, she would have stood up to them,
00:44
told them, "You're not doing this. It's all wrong."
00:46
So they should just be sending it up to the mayor and just...
00:49
You tell them, "You're not doing it," because the directors are feeding off us.
00:53
They're getting the money. You know what I mean?
00:55
Directors are feeding it off people like us, and they're getting the money in their pockets.
01:00
That's my opinion.
01:01
Have you managed to resist putting your heating on yet?
01:04
Yes.
01:05
Yes, yes.
01:06
And when are you likely to put it on?
01:08
Christmas.
01:09
When it snows.
01:11
About Christmas.
01:13
Do you think the government should be doing more to help people with the rising cost of fuel?
01:18
Definitely.
01:19
Definitely.
01:20
I can always do more.
01:21
What kinds of things do you think they could do?
01:23
I think they should prevent it actually escalating into the crisis that we can't afford.
01:29
So do you think they should be tackling the energy companies?
01:32
Definitely.
01:33
Yeah.
01:34
Yeah, they're making millions.
01:35
Yeah.
01:36
It's no good them doing it, and us, and then it's still escalating like it is.
01:43
It needs to be stopped at the source, doesn't it, really?
01:47
Yeah, I have sometimes.
01:48
I just find it's only for an hour to take the real chill out of the house.
01:51
Whereas I would have this time last year, or the year before, I would have had it on longer by now, yeah.
01:55
And why would you have had it on longer by now?
01:57
I wouldn't have worried about the cost of it as much as I do now.
02:00
So, you know, at night I've got a little boy and I make sure that he's warm enough,
02:04
and then once he's in bed we switch it off.
02:06
So that's enough for us, yeah.
02:07
And do you think the government should be doing more to mitigate?
02:09
Yeah, absolutely.
02:10
I think there should be a lot more help for us.
02:12
I think we should really try to re-accumulate this price cap and bring that down.
02:15
I don't see why it's not going to be brought down a bit further.
02:18
I understand there's help, obviously, for those on certain benefits,
02:21
but I think as well as working families, I think you can see the rising costs,
02:25
it's having a big impact, as well as a rising mortgage and a rising council tax.
02:29
So I think all these things need to be taken into consideration,
02:31
but everyone needs the support, so I think they should maybe make a bigger impact on a bigger scale, I think.
02:36
No, I haven't bothered.
02:39
Okay.
02:40
Because it's too expensive, you think?
02:42
When do you think you're likely to put it on?
02:45
How cold would it have to get?
02:48
I would say below zero.
02:51
And the cost of it.
02:57
Even when I don't turn it on, it takes money off all the time.
03:01
And it's turned out to be expensive as well.
03:04
The gas hasn't been half cost, it's only been expensive.
03:10
That's the only way I can heat, you see.
03:13
But I need the gas on for the heating to work, and I need the electric on,
03:19
because that controls the thermostat, which controls the boiler.
03:23
So if either one go, I'm stuck, that's it. There's nothing I can do.
03:29
Do you think the government should be doing more to mitigate the rising costs?
03:33
Definitely. I think definitely.
03:36
What do you think they should do?
03:40
You wouldn't like my opinion. I'd say sack them all and start again.
03:43
And recuperate all the money.
03:47
And then share it out to the people that genuinely need it.
03:51
That's what I'd say.
