Campus Conflict Erupts at UPenn Over President's Handling of Israel-Palestine Conflict
  • 6 months ago
University of Pennsylvania President Elizabeth Magill is facing calls for her resignation from critics who say she has not strongly condemned anti-Semitism enough. There is conflict on campus between supporters of Israel and Palestinians over Magill's responses to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. Some students held a walkout to protest Magill's statements, which they say ignored the plight of Palestinians. Supporters of Israel also feel her statements did not adequately support the Jewish community. The conflict was sparked by a Palestine Writes Literature Festival that included some speakers with histories of making anti-Semitic statements. Billionaire UPenn donor Marc Rowan is among those calling for Magill and the Board chair to resign until changes are made. However, the Board says they support Magill's leadership, and no changes are planned.
