New exhibition on Japanese culture to open at the Young V&A

A new exhibition on Japanese culture is set to open at the Young V&A this weekend.

00:00 A new exhibition, 'Taking Visitors on a Journey through Japanese Culture', will open at Young

00:05 V&A this Saturday. It is the first exhibition at the museum since it reopened on 1st July

00:11 this year.

00:13 Japan Myths to Manga traces the influence of Japanese folklore on contemporary design

00:18 and offers children and their families the chance to look at Japanese art and animation,

00:23 as well as robots, fashion and film.

00:26 The exhibition will feature more than 150 objects ranging from the 15th century to the

00:31 present day, from Hokusai prints to Sylvanian families and transformers.

00:37 There will be several interactive activities for children on offer, including origami and

00:41 manga stations, a sensory forest and Japanese drums.

00:45 So this exhibition is really an introduction to Japan and we're using museum objects, we're

00:50 using stories, we're using contemporary art to bring people into the world of Japan, to

00:55 bring them into this incredible and dynamic culture and it's a foundation.

00:59 So what's important for me is that we inspire the next generation, they get the chance to

01:03 see things they might not otherwise see, find out amazing stories and go further.

01:09 And that's what I hope this exhibition will do.

01:11 So we have a lot of things for people to see, people to find out about, some stories, amazing

01:16 things to learn. We also have things for people to make.

01:19 So we have an origami making station, we have a manga drawing station, so as well as taking

01:24 away some incredible sights and sounds that they've taken in, they can take things with

01:29 them that they've made.

01:30 And I think that's what we really want people to take away, is something very personal,

01:34 a new experience and possibly a new future interest in Japan or in robotics or in space

01:40 travel, so many exciting possibilities.
