With just one week to go until the referendum on a proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament takes place, remote communities across the country are already casting their vote at remote polling places. In the north-west of South Australia, it's their turn to cast their ballot, but as the ABC found, many are still unsure as to what they're actually voting for.

00:00 400 kilometres from Alice Springs, the Australian Electoral Commission has arrived in the Anangu
00:07 Pijinjara/Yakunajara lands.
00:10 They're setting up shop in Indalkina, a tiny community in the APY lands, where residents
00:15 are casting their votes.
00:18 For many, the first they are hearing of the proposed Indigenous voice to Parliament is
00:22 what's being shared by Yes23 campaigners outside.
00:26 No one from the no-side is here today.
00:29 I don't really know about the voice but, you know, this is the first time I'm here to speak
00:37 about the voice and, you know, what it really means.
00:43 Some people don't really understand what the voice is.
00:46 Anne Ward helps care for her brother with a disability and hopes her vote will get her
00:51 community more government support.
00:54 I need more help, that's all. So if Anangu say yes, they are looking at like more, more,
01:03 more help from government.
01:05 For others, a fence around the church grounds and speed bumps on the road are front of mind.
01:11 And now I'd like to see something different, changes coming up for the community. Instead
01:16 of going the same way every day, doing the same old things.
01:22 But the biggest issue among voters is better outcomes for young people in the APY lands.
01:28 For Anangu and for other young people, there's a lot of, because we really need government
01:35 people to support the communities for young children when they grow up.
01:41 The Australian Electoral Commission will keep travelling around the APY lands, giving communities
01:46 the chance to cast their vote. For people here in Indalkina, the long wait for change
01:52 continues.
01:53 A town hoping for unity and change.
