00:00 You know, the S13 modification plan is so well known at this point that it'd be stupid

00:06 not to follow it.

00:07 So this episode we're going to tackle a really basic installation that a lot of 240SX diehard

00:12 guys know.

00:13 So let's just call this 240SX S13 101 or 5 lug hubs for dummies.

00:40 To finish baseline testing we went to the dyno because... science.

00:44 Or let's call it perverse curiosity.

00:46 Whatever you call it, this 240 is probably the least interesting car to ever get on the

00:49 rollers at K&N Engineering.

00:51 Surprisingly, this 240SX S13 101 was a lot of fun.

01:21 The Nissan didn't break.

01:22 It instead put down 118 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque, which after factoring

01:27 in drivetrain losses, is on the low side of its 155 horsepower, 160 pound-foot rating.

01:33 Interestingly, torque drops substantially after 2,700 RPM, which is something I quickly

01:38 pinned on that exhaust because I like faulting that hunk of metal for everything that's wrong

01:42 in the world.

01:44 Unfortunately, subsequent internet searches show a similar dip in torque on stock KA24DEs,

01:49 so it probably isn't the exhaust's fault.

01:51 I still have my suspicions.

01:57 S13s came with 4 lug hubs, which is fine, but switching to a 5 lug hub really opens

02:11 up the variety of wheels and brakes you can use.

02:14 So we're switching to 5 lug with these Isis Performance 5 lug hubs, courtesy of Injuku

02:18 Racing.

02:20 They're purdy.

02:23 The 5 lug hubs mean we can use this ridiculous and overkill Brembo Gran Turismo braking system

02:28 on the front.

02:29 These are 13.1 inch vented front rotors.

02:33 Also comes with this massive 4-piston caliper, which is just awesome, and all the necessary

02:39 hardware, including brake lines and so on.

02:44 For wheels, we went with Gram Lights from Rays.

02:46 This is the 5.7 DR, 17 by 9 at all four corners.

02:50 And for tires, we're using 245/17 BF Goodrich G-Force Rivals.

02:55 We spent a lot of time deciding on tires, and these ultra high max performance summer

02:59 tire, or whatever they're called, give a lot of grip and a lot of fun from behind the

03:05 wheel.

03:06 We're starting with the 5 lug hub conversion because it gives us the opportunity to perform

03:09 some exploratory surgery.

03:12 While we're inside, we'll be able to see what needs replacing and what doesn't.

03:16 Helping us out on the install is video producer and resident 240SX specialist, Mark Linnarden.

03:29 So we're starting with the rear axle.

03:30 What you have to do is, of course, pull the wheel and tire off, then essentially remove

03:33 the knuckle from all the control arms and links and so on in the back.

03:37 Pull off the caliper, remove the knuckle from the axle, disassemble it, put on the 5 lug

03:44 hub, reassemble it in the opposite process, or opposite way you did it during disassembly.

03:49 And that's kind of it.

04:02 Couple cool things we found after pulling apart basically the rear suspension of our

04:05 Nissan.

04:07 We don't have stability control, we don't have traction control, obviously, we don't

04:09 have ABS.

04:10 We also don't have HICAS, which was Nissan's rear steering thing they had back in the early

04:13 90s.

04:14 That means things are way less complicated than they can be.

04:18 We also have a 6 bolt rear axle, which some people think might be stronger, but who knows.

04:22 And we also have these awesome Tokiko blue shocks, which help lower the car, give it

04:26 that awesome stance.

04:40 So we made it about three quarters of the way through our first planned stages of modifications.

04:44 Ran into a few snags, but it's okay because the car looks really cool with these wheels

04:48 and tires and brakes on them.

04:50 The Brembo's fit, which is great, and it looks awesome.

04:53 The downside is we've added a lot of unsprung weight, which is a bummer, but it's okay because

04:57 the performance gains we should get from these tires and brakes should be worth it.

05:01 Snags.

05:02 Well, it looks like the right rear caliper may have seized up.

05:05 We've also found the engine's running on three cylinders, which is interesting.

05:08 It makes it sound like a Subaru, so we're gonna have to deal with that.

05:12 Next stage of modifications after fixing those will be coil overs, look at the bushings,

05:16 probably replace some suspension components, maybe approach the rear diff.

05:20 And then finally, at some point, we're gonna have to add power because no one wants to

05:23 be a show queen at all, especially me.

05:27 Oh, hi there.

05:31 Should do the stand up like that.

05:32 So this is what we call a wheel.

05:35 It holds a thing called the tire, the tire, the tiree.

05:42 It's made of rubber, mostly, I think.

05:45 That could be carbon fiber, I don't know.

05:47 This is carbon fiber.

05:49 I don't know anything about cars.

05:53 That's not carbon fiber.

05:54 That's unobtainium.

05:58 And they fill this with water because that stays fresher than air for longer in a sealed

06:04 vacuum and it's actually lighter, which you may not be surprised to hear.
