Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to make a decision on the future of HS2 this week.

High Speed 2 (HS2) is a high-speed railway line planned to run between Manchester and London, with branches to Birmingham and the East Midlands.

However, pressure is growing on the PM to make an announcement amidst rumours he may halt the line's Birmingham to Manchester leg.

HS2 was to be Britain's second purpose-built high-speed line, the first being High Speed 1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel. The majority of the project was planned to be completed between 2029 and 2033.

The stated goal of HS2 is to "help to level up by bringing Britain’s largest economic regions closer together so that more businesses can flourish in the Midlands and the North".
