Can we just cross though to the HS2 line, which I feel like you're trying to get off this.
00:25
There's been a lot of rumour, a lot of speculation.
00:28
Let's end this right here, right now.
00:31
Tell the people of Greater Manchester, are you scrapping the HS2 line between Birmingham and Manchester?
00:37
I know there's a lot of speculation on this, but we've already got spades in the ground on the first bit of HS2
00:43
and what we're doing is getting on with delivering it.
00:45
Now of course, always government is making sure.
00:47
So that's a commitment?
00:48
As I said, we've got spades in the ground on phase one and we're getting on with delivering.
00:51
HS2 is just one of the many things we are doing to level up across our country
00:56
and it's one of the many things we're doing to invest in the north and in transport infrastructure in the north.
01:00
Sorry, I feel just like we're going off topic here and I just want to keep it focused on HS2
01:05
because you haven't, we're straight talking people in the north.
01:08
It's a yes or a no.
01:10
Are you scrapping the HS2 line between Birmingham and Manchester?
01:15
Like I said, I'm not speculating on future things.
01:18
We've got spades in the ground right now and we're getting on.
01:20
But is it under review?
01:21
But what people also want to know,
01:23
government is always making sure that we get value for money out of everything we do,
01:26
but that's just a statement of the obvious, right?
01:28
The story right now across the country is people want to know about the future of HS2
01:33
and still now you can't give me a yes or a no and you're the man in control.
01:39
You have the keys.
01:40
You can tell us now if that's happening.
01:42
But Anna, my point to you is the vast majority of the journeys that people make are in their cars,
01:49
making sure that we make sure our roads are well maintained is really important.
01:52
We're talking about trains.
01:53
We're not talking about cars.
01:55
But even when it comes to trains,
01:57
the thing that people raise with me also is what are you doing to connect up all our great towns and cities
02:02
of the north, west to east, and that's what we're doing too.
02:05
HS2, he says, has to go ahead.
02:07
What do you think?
02:09
Look, where I completely agree with Andy is that we invest in transport infrastructure
02:14
because that's a key part of how we level up,
02:16
how we create jobs and spread opportunity around the country, and we are doing that.
02:19
Prime Minister, that's great, but we're talking about HS2.
02:22
You know, will this line go further from Birmingham up to Manchester?
02:25
That's what people want to know.
02:27
Look, there are spades in the ground right now at the moment making sure that we complete the first part of this line
02:33
from Birmingham to central London, and we're absolutely getting on with that.
02:37
That is important.
02:38
Let's talk about HS2 because lots of people feel that maybe you have gone against the north.
02:45
Have you?
02:47
Hi, Joanie.
02:49
Good morning.
02:50
Good morning to everyone listening as well.
02:51
Lovely to hear your story about Ayesgar Falls, which is actually local to me at home in Wensleydale.
02:55
I can thoroughly recommend everyone visiting it.
02:57
When it comes to transport, we are investing record sums in transport infrastructure,
03:03
particularly in the north, which I know acutely where the challenges are.
03:07
And I think when I speak to people when I'm at home or anywhere else around,
03:11
you know, what everyone tells me is that you've got to make it easier to get around all our northern towns and cities.
03:16
You know, whether it's Hull, York, Leeds, Sheffield, all the way over to Liverpool.
03:21
Connecting all those cities up is really important, and we're doing that.
03:24
But also investing in the local transport that people use every day, making sure that our potholes are filled,
03:29
making sure that our bus services are running, particularly important in rural areas like mine.
03:33
So you're talking about Wensleydale.
03:35
And we're doing all of those things because ultimately making it easier for people to get around
03:40
is how we're going to create jobs, drive growth, and just make life a bit better for people.
03:44
But we're hearing that the possibility of scrapping the line, the HS2 line, north of Birmingham.
03:50
People will feel betrayed.
03:52
No, I think what people will see, I mean, particularly around where we are, my home is in North Allerton,
03:59
and we're investing record amounts in improving infrastructure, but also delivering, levelling up.
04:05
Right. I know you've been asked this a few times this morning, but is HS2 axed or not?
04:10
It's not really acceptable to say, I don't really know.
04:13
Well, Prime Minister, it's your decision.
04:15
Yeah, yeah, no, it is. But there's been a lot of speculation about it.
04:18
And what I've been saying is, I know there's a lot of focus on this one thing,
04:22
but I think for your listeners and for listeners everywhere, I want to make sure that I reassure them
04:27
that we're investing in transport everywhere, not just in this one train line,
04:31
but it's important that we invest in bus routes, particularly in rural areas.
04:34
It's important that we invest in local roads.
04:36
Is it axed or not? Yes or no? We're supposed to be told on Friday, we understand.
04:40
It's Thursday.
04:42
There's lots of speculation about lots of things, but we've got literally have spades in the ground
04:46
that we're getting on and delivering as we speak.
