There sometimes is a lack of clarity around the purpose

and value of being physically back in offices.

Folks that have been called back into the office

question the reason because they're not doing

anything differently than what they would be doing at home.

They're just physically at a desk,

typing on their computers, answering emails.

The most important piece of this is backing it up.

We can't just say it, send the memo,

and then have everyone come back.

It is because of this, because of this purpose,

collaboration of connection,

and we see these results because of that.

That's more of the conversation

I think leaders should have.

I think the burden of proof sits with leaders

that are unveiling these transitions.

Something that leaders should be really cognizant of

is not stopping at just bringing people

Leaders assume that the happy hour, the events,

the yoga, the wellness, whatever it may be,

is doing its job, and that's just frankly not the case.

I think social proximity is built on authentic experiences

in team building exercises and retreats

in difficult conversations around collaboration

and really honoring the authentic contributions

of every team member in a space.

Anything that builds that fabric of trust and connection

builds social proximity,

that when you go to the happy hour,

you wanna be there with the people that are there,

not necessarily just assuming that because we have

a happy hour, people are connected.

The in-office experience is not the same for everyone.

We have a lot of conversations around black professionals,

leaders of color, who for them, remote work,

offered a moment of respite away from microaggressions,

navigating workplace bias,

even some hostility in some cases.

And then we can also think about caregivers,

which is largely still women who carry that load.

Remote work offered flexibility to be able to juggle career

and those caregiving responsibilities

in a way that's sustainable,

that actually could benefit them

in their career trajectory.

And so that hesitation towards coming back into the office

is not just because someone wants to work

in their PJs at home.

It can really mean a lot of different things

for different people.

In order to really make effective organization-wide policies

and practices, you must understand the totality

of the context within which folks are working.

In that, you then better design ways that all can thrive,

that is aware of the different experiences

and isn't the kind of wide swath change

that a lot of times I see

that doesn't have any consideration

of those that might be experiencing this

with marginalized perspectives.

That's gonna be the challenge of today's leader.

And I encourage leaders to really be thoughtful

and aware and grounded in the context

that all team members are coming into

to experience a workplace that they can succeed in.

We're all feeling this as the potential

of a future of work moment.

I feel like we'll look back on this

and think this is where things shifted.

We have some opportunity to really change things

and shift the direction of what work can look like.
