Moor Monkton WW2 Memorial

On the 28th September 1943, in the middle of WWII,  a Lancaster bomber on a training mission, crashed near Cock Hill farm in Moor Monkton, York with the loss of all 7 Canadian and UK airmen on board. A memorial has been placed at the church in Moor Monkton with a ceremony taking place on September 23rd 2023.

00:00 My name is Les Hitchings. I live in Moormoncton, a little village outside of York. A few years

00:06 ago we discovered that a Lancaster had crashed here and we are now able to dedicate this

00:14 memorial to the seven crew that unfortunately lost their lives on early morning on the 28th

00:21 of September 1943. Hopefully this memorial does them justice.

00:28 The memorial is placed in a prominent position at the entrance to the churchyard at All Saints

00:35 Church Moormoncton and is available for members of the public to come and look at. We also

00:42 have memorabilia that can be made available too. We hope you are able to come and join

00:48 us in the memorial to these brave airmen.

00:53 We are holding a memorial service at 3 o'clock at the church here on Saturday the 23rd of

01:02 September 2023, almost exactly 80 years to the day of the crash.

01:09 The aircrew were very young and they comprised seven airmen, two from the Royal Canadian

01:17 Air Force and five from the RAF Volunteer Reserve.
