NYFW Spring/Summer 2024: Bibhu Mohapatra's Latest Collection Aims to Empower Women

The Spring Summer 2024 collection by Bibhu Mohapatra is inspired by female artists and sculptors Augusta Savage and Simone Leigh with one goal -- to empower women. He does this with asymmetrical dresses, draping, form-fitting, and strong silhouettes with faint embroidery detailing from the artists' work. There was lots of fringe, cutouts, and crystal embellishment too. Modern, feminine, strong, all the buzzwords in fashion come 2024.

00:11 The Spring '24 inspiration came from an article that I read about Augusta Savage, a black

00:16 female sculptor from the Harlem Renaissance era, a pioneer in many ways, and her life

00:22 and how she sort of inspired and paved way for many artists, drawing a parallel between

00:28 her and someone called Simone Lee, a contemporary female artist, someone who also draws a lot

00:35 from Afro-ethnicities and her roots.

00:40 But it's about really empowering women and my clothes always have a goal that they have

00:44 to be pretty, they have to be beautiful, they have to be modern.

00:47 At the same time, I want to empower my audience with my clothes.

00:52 The key notes I used is a lot of embroideries that came from very faint details of both

00:59 these artists that created this beautiful body of work.

01:03 So there's a lot of ease, there's a lot of few form fitted but balanced with a lot of

01:08 ease, a lot of sculptural drapes, very restrained color palette of pinks and some yellows and

01:13 lavender and black and stone, a lot of custom textiles, Japanese caddy and custom lace.

01:19 Hair was done by Joseph DiMaggio and Jenny Smith did the makeup.

01:25 We wanted to create a youthful vibe as you saw, but we wanted to respect the natural

01:31 attributes of the models.

01:32 Most of them are, actually all of them are persons of color and they come with different

01:36 hairstyles, so we respected them, just added little things to make them.

01:40 If they had long hair, we tried to create a specific type of sculptural element and

01:46 some twist.

01:48 Makeup was very fresh and modern and youthful, not too done and just importance in the eyes.
