00:13 On the last visit to Angliru, Jonas Vingegaard and birthday boy Sepp Kuss were simple lieutenants

00:17 for Primoz Roglic.

00:18 This year, the trio are dominating the GC.

00:21 For sure we are stronger now.

00:24 Back then Primoz was in the red jersey and now we are 1, 2 and 3 in the GC and we will

00:32 try to defend our position in the general classification.

00:36 Is there a tactic or will the legs do the talking?

00:39 Yeah, I think the legs will do the talking.

00:43 It's a very honest climb in the end so you cannot hide anywhere.

00:48 One man who could disrupt their plans is Remco Evenepoel, who's already won two stages,

00:52 although the Belgian champion, who's now a long way back overall, is also targeting the

00:56 polka dots.

00:58 I think it's important to try to be in the break and take the points on the first two

01:03 climbs and now we have to see and wait the situation from behind depending on what the

01:07 GC teams will do.

01:15 Angliru hosts a Vuelta stage finish for the ninth time today, having first featured in

01:19 '99.

01:20 There are three riders in the peloton who've won on the famous climb, Hugh Carthy, Kenny

01:24 Ellesand and Wout Poels.

01:26 They all have fond memories of a day that marked their careers and they'd love to be

01:30 up there again today.

01:31 Yeah, I have really good memories so I really look forward to go again.

01:35 Yeah, I feel good.

01:36 Yesterday was a really good day.

01:37 I had good legs so hopefully today we can repeat it.

01:41 The bike has changed a lot in ten years.

01:43 I would like it to be the same but it's short.

01:46 I feel like they want to win every day.

01:50 I don't know, they're strong.

01:52 Even now, we see the riders who are going to the escape now.

01:55 I've spoken to Clem Coe before and he's as motivated as ever to get points.

01:59 Even if I end up in the escape with him, it's going to be complicated.

02:06 Stage 17 is another short one of just 125 kilometres with a very tough final.

02:11 There are two Cap 1 climbs before we even get to the Angliru.

02:14 It's 12.4 kilometres at an average of 9.8% and it just keeps getting harder

02:19 with passages at over 20%.

02:22 Only a rider at the top of their game will be able to conquer the monster of the Asturias.

02:27 Well, as promised, Evan O'Poole was quickly on the move

02:37 and he kept attacking until he found himself in this three-man breakaway.

02:41 There were almost 60 kilometres to cover before the first climb,

02:44 but at this speed, it didn't take them long.

02:47 Not too many riders seem to fancy the prospect of a fight with Evan O'Poole,

02:50 especially with Jumbo Visma keeping him on a tight leash.

02:53 So, in the end, the Belgian champion only had two companions,

02:57 his Soudal Quick-Step teammate Mattia Cataneo

02:59 and Italian neo-pro Lorenzo Germani of Groupama FDJ.

03:03 The road soon began to climb.

03:05 We commence the first climb of the day, the Alto della Coglie D'Eia.

03:08 This first category climb, 7.8 kilometres long.

03:12 A few riders tried but failed to bridge across to the front group

03:16 and Germani was soon dropped.

03:18 Further back, there was a first bit of GC movement.

03:21 Marc Solaire has decided that he wants to try something

03:26 on this first categorised climb of the day.

03:29 Solaire setting off on a solo chase.

03:31 He trialled the Soudal Quick-Step duo by around a minute

03:34 as they approached the summit of the first climb.

03:38 Ten points into the pocket of Remco Evan O'Poole.

03:42 He crossed the top of the Alto della Coglie D'Eia first,

03:46 alongside his teammate Mattia Cataneo.

03:49 Cataneo doing a fine job for his team leader on the ensuing descent

04:00 and the road to the second climb.

04:02 Evan O'Poole was still a few minutes clear of the peloton

04:04 and resisting the chasers.

04:07 Solaire had linked up with Germani and Edoardo Sepulveda

04:10 but they weren't getting any closer as Remco decided to go solo.

04:14 It's a tap on the arm from Remco Evan O'Poole to Mattia Cataneo

04:20 and now Remco Evan O'Poole flies up this penultimate climb of the day.

04:25 Solaire refused to give up, catching and dropping Cataneo.

04:29 Evan O'Poole still had over two minutes on the peloton though,

04:32 now being driven by Bahrain Victorious

04:34 on behalf of Mikel Landa, Wout Poels and Santiago Buitrago.

04:38 The Belgian picked up another 10 points at the summit of the Alto del Cordal,

04:43 so job done for the polka-dot jersey.

04:45 But the bunch were starting to close in and they soon caught Solaire.

04:49 Angliru looming into view, shrouded in mist.

04:55 Evan O'Poole still led by a minute and 20 seconds at the foot

04:58 as he embarked on 12 of the most punishing kilometres in cycling.

05:03 The former world champion was eventually caught with just over 5km to go,

05:07 heading into the steepest part of the climb with Romain Bardet looking to up the tempo.

05:12 Another acceleration from Romain Bardet.

05:17 The Frenchman was soon reeled in by Wout Poels,

05:22 who were setting a furious pace at the front of this rapidly dwindling group.

05:26 GC riders like Juan Ayuso, Enric Mas and Kian Utterbroeks couldn't hold on.

05:31 However, Kuss, Wingergaard and Roglic were riding the Bahrain-Victorious train

05:36 behind Poels, Buitrago and Landa.

05:38 Only six left at the front, three from each team.

05:41 Jumbo-Visma just biding their time,

05:44 with Roglic attacking inside 3km and dropping the Bahrain-Victorious trio.

05:49 His two team-mates did manage to catch up,

05:51 although Kuss couldn't quite hold the wheel in the final kilometres

05:54 as Roglic and Wingergaard opened a small gap.

05:57 Kuss joined by Landa as the winners of the Giro and the Tour approached the finish line.

06:02 200 metres to go and it's Primoz Roglic who's coming down the descent,

06:09 down the other side of the Alto de Langliru.

06:11 The mythical stage awaits and it's Primoz Roglic who's victorious at the top of the Alto de Langliru.

06:18 Another day, another win for Jumbo-Visma, their fifth of the race so far,

06:24 and another 1-2-3 to boot.

06:27 Kuss couldn't quite celebrate his birthday with victory,

06:29 but he keeps the red jersey while Roglic triumphed on the legendary climb of Angliru.

06:34 It's the Slovenian's 12th Vuelta a Este when his 14th of the season,

06:38 all three riders putting more significant time into their GC rivals.

06:43 I mean on the last climb, the way or the point I went

06:53 it's just so hard and so steep.

06:55 I just hit my own tempo and yeah,

06:57 then the climb will tell who is the first second.

07:01 Roglic and Vingegaard coming in 19 seconds clear of Kuss and Landa.

07:11 Puls and Almeida were the only other men within a minute,

07:13 followed by Utterbroecks and Bue-Trago.

07:16 Ayuso and Maas both lost over a minute and 40 seconds.

07:21 The gap between Kuss and Vingegaard is down to just eight seconds.

07:24 Roglic is a minute and eight back,

07:26 with Ayuso still the next best man at exactly four minutes.

07:29 Caden Grove still has the green jersey somewhere in that mist,

07:34 although Evano-Pul slightly cut the gap today to 76 points.

07:37 The Belgian's closing on victory in the mountains classification.

07:42 With today's haul, he now leads Vingegaard by 40 points.

07:45 Ayuso held on to the white jersey,

07:50 but he loses a few seconds to Utterbroecks.

07:52 The gap between the Spaniard and the Belgian is now two minutes and 43 seconds.

07:56 There are more mountains to come tomorrow,

08:01 with five climbs and an unprecedented summit finish to La Cruz de Linares.
