Morocco earthquake: Britain joins other countries in supplying aid to the country

Rescuers are in a race against time to locate survivors amidst the debris, over 48 hours following Morocco's most devastating earthquake in over six decades. The catastrophe claimed the lives of 2,497 individuals, leaving villages in the High Atlas Mountains in ruins. According to Remy Mossu, the director of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, Morocco can expect to experience aftershocks for weeks, if not months. He revealed that more than 25 aftershocks have already jolted the country following the initial 6.8 magnitude earthquake.

Mossu emphasized, "There will be aftershocks. It is not probably, it is a certainty."

For some villagers, the struggle lies in finding sufficient space to lay their loved ones to rest, as funerals coincide with ongoing rescue efforts. Others are making preparations for additional graves, anticipating the recovery of more bodies while rescue operations persist.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has extended gratitude to Spain, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates for their aid. The UK government is poised to dispatch 60 search and rescue specialists along with four search dogs to Morocco.

The Red Cross estimates that the rehabilitation of the quake's damage may span several years.
