00:00 That was incredible!
00:02 That's how you do a 9pm HBO style drop.
00:06 Wow! Trending number one because it earned it.
00:10 This is the type of show that you need to watch when it drops.
00:14 Oh boy! And stay off Twitter,
00:16 'cause there's exciting stuff, you know, popping up every few minutes.
00:21 I mean, it was just fantastic.
00:22 Seriously, we have reached Game of Thrones levels.
00:26 Not like the upper echelon, but we're in the space
00:29 with episode 4, though?
00:32 I mean, one has to wonder if it's too little too late,
00:34 especially after a whole bunch of mediocre Star Wars content.
00:38 Also, and this is a vital also,
00:41 does this episode mean as much to people who didn't watch
00:44 or at least are familiar with Clone Wars and Rebels?
00:48 I would guess not.
00:50 I mean, it might still be ha--
00:52 I mean, who could deny the beauty of this episode?
00:55 But some of the reveals just aren't gonna play the same.
00:59 And I'm curious, if you are one of the people
01:02 who is not at all familiar with Clone Wars and Rebels,
01:04 how did the episode play to you?
01:07 But to anyone who's a fan of the feloniverse,
01:09 oh baby, this was hot stuff!
01:12 I watch Rebels, thanks to you guys insisting that I did.
01:16 Again, thank you. I tried to pay it forward
01:18 and, you know, really warn a lot of you that you need to watch Rebels,
01:21 and I think I pulled a couple people through with me.
01:24 And then also I've seen a few episodes of Clone Wars as well,
01:27 largely thanks to you guys.
01:29 And I watch the Bad Batch, which I really like.
01:31 But I was just blown away by this episode.
01:33 It was incredible.
01:34 And we'll break it all down in a second,
01:36 but first, let's just bask in the glory of this episode.
01:41 Anakin Skywalker returns!
01:43 Uh, right out of the Clone Wars, as Ahsoka remembers him.
01:47 Hold onto that thought.
01:48 Uh, Sabine turns on Ahsoka
01:51 and joins the enemy in the hopes of finding Ezra.
01:54 Wow! Merrick is some kind of smoke monster!
01:57 Probably a smoke demon, I have my theories.
02:00 But I told ya, Game of Thrones vibes!
02:02 Sometimes, blatant!
02:04 Uh, RIP Ray Stevenson, by the way.
02:07 Incredible performance.
02:08 Wow, we've been wondering where he was the last few episodes...
02:11 He really stepped up this one.
02:14 Uh, the hyperdrive jump!
02:16 Uh, it didn't need to be that good, but I'm so glad it was.
02:19 Uh, lightsabers that look and sound like lightsabers!
02:22 Oh, how we've missed you!
02:24 And then droid-on-droid violence.
02:26 Oh boy, and just, as I said, a beautifully directed episode.
02:30 And on that note, while I'm real happy that Dave Filoni is trending
02:34 as he wrote this episode, as he did all the Ahsoka episodes
02:38 really engineering some tremendous payoffs
02:41 although I would have told him to maybe move it up a little bit
02:43 I'd be like, "Your episode 4 is amazing!"
02:45 "Let's make sure people are still watching by the time you get to it!"
02:48 Uh, but he's getting payoffs that he engineered
02:52 through his decades of storytelling and animation
02:54 where, you know, he got his start.
02:57 But let's also give it up for director Peter Ramsey
03:00 who was one of the original Spider-Verse directors
03:03 and who, by the way, I recently interviewed
03:05 for his series of African animated shorts
03:08 also on Disney+, so check that out, I'll put a link down below
03:11 and Peter Ramsey made a huge difference here!
03:14 Oh my goodness, shot after shot after shot after shot after shot after shot!
03:18 Of just amazing directing!
03:21 Before I even realized it was Peter Ramsey
03:23 when the episode started I was like, "Who's directing this?"
03:26 "This thing's gorgeous!"
03:28 Uh, it was amazing.
03:29 And the transition from the water to Ahsoka
03:32 and the world between worlds, which I'll explain to you
03:35 BEAUTIFUL!
03:37 Also, the ambient noise when the episode started
03:40 was just so perfect, it was hypnotic
03:42 you felt like you were there!
03:44 And not just like you were there
03:46 but it gave you that sense of eerie quiet and vulnerability
03:50 just like our heroes.
03:52 It also reminded me a little bit of a theme park
03:54 and I was having a great time.
03:56 That was so, so good.
03:57 Welcome to live action directing, Peter Ramsey.
04:01 I think you're gonna stick around.
04:03 If I was any major franchise
04:05 I would be on the-- even late at night
04:08 I would be like, "Call up Peter Ramsey's management and agent"
04:12 "whoever's representing him"
04:13 "and lock 'em down for whatever I'm working on"
04:15 "if Disney hasn't done it already."
04:17 And they'd be nuts not to.
04:18 I mean, they got an advance look at this
04:20 I'd be like, "Yoink! Peter Ramsey, you're with us now!"
04:22 And he did just do that Disney+ series.
04:25 And I continue to feel strongly
04:28 that while I'm excited for Dave Filoni to write a Star Wars movie
04:31 I don't think he should direct it with all due respect.
04:34 Because quite frankly
04:37 the best Star Wars live action episodes to date
04:39 have been directed by other people.
04:41 And while Filoni might get there one day
04:44 he might get to that same level
04:45 he's not gonna do it by the time he needs to make his movie!
04:49 He's not-- I mean, he comes from a cartoon animation background
04:52 and you can see that in his live action directing, I'm afraid.
04:55 This is just a whole 'nother level.
04:57 And it took Peter Ramsey to bring the gravitas
05:02 that this show so desperately needed it
05:04 to make it what it could finally be.
05:06 You know, they keep bringing in-- it's interesting
05:09 both directors of color
05:10 Peter Ramsey, Rick Famuyiwa
05:12 they bring these guys in at the end
05:14 when, you know, the seasons have already shed a lot of viewers
05:18 and it's frustrating because they're really delivering
05:20 Rick Famuyiwa's doing the season finale for Ahsoka!
05:23 But I digress.
05:25 Dave Filoni directs the-- he directed the first episode for Ahsoka
05:29 and he directs the next episode
05:30 so you know episode 5 is gonna be good
05:32 because Filoni said, you know, speaking of yoink
05:35 yoinked it for himself.
05:36 But when the end credits rolled for episode 4
05:40 again with the amazing score
05:42 which was amazing throughout the episode again
05:45 that's when I was like, "We've reached Game of Thrones levels!"
05:48 And that same wonderful feeling of satisfaction washed over me
05:51 and excitement to talk about it!
05:53 Ah! How we've thirsted to feel that sensation once more!
05:56 And the credits should be at the front of the episode again, by the way.
05:59 I mean, just see what it does with Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon?
06:02 It sets the tone!
06:04 Uh, they have credits in the beginning and the end.
06:07 You put the big glitzy credits in the front
06:09 and then you put the other stuff, you know
06:10 there's two sections of credits as it is right now.
06:13 Put the glossy ones up front
06:14 and then the other ones at the end
06:16 and you can still have the music playing when the episode ends
06:18 to keep people in the mood.
06:20 Alright, let's break down the episode in order of awesomeness.
06:24 So yeah!
06:25 I'm thinking Anakin's back!
06:28 Where the heck are they?!
06:29 Well, if you didn't watch Rebels, then you don't know.
06:31 But this is the World Between Worlds
06:33 which was introduced in Star Wars Rebels
06:36 which Ezra entered through a secret door that Sabine unlocked
06:39 in the Jedi Temple on Lothal
06:41 and then they sealed it again.
06:43 Uh, here you can literally browse the timeline
06:46 and in Rebels, Ezra pulled Ahsoka out of her fight there
06:49 against Darth Vader, aka Anakin
06:52 right before she was killed, therefore saving her life.
06:55 And apparently no complete disregard for the timeline.
06:58 Ha! I don't--you know, Ahsoka wouldn't do that.
07:00 In fact, Ahsoka kept him from going and finding, uh, uh, Kanan.
07:03 Darn it.
07:05 So what--what is Anakin doing here?
07:07 Is this where Force ghosts hang out?
07:09 Or is he a construct of Ahsoka's mind?
07:13 I'm kinda leaning in that direction.
07:15 Because he does, after all, look the way she remembers him
07:19 uh, and Clone Wars fans remember him the fondest.
07:22 Thanks to a little de-aging.
07:24 Hayden Christensen don't need no de-aging, ah!
07:27 But, uh, but anyway, also Balin was just talking about
07:29 how Ahsoka is more like her master than she thinks
07:32 so she probably has Anakin on the brain.
07:34 I mean, she just--that was like a very bad, uh, evening for Ahsoka.
07:38 Ha ha! You know, her Padawan betrayed her, it seems, yet again.
07:42 Uh, you know, she was, you know, her whole--
07:45 you know, she thought she'd left the Jedi Order
07:47 so that she'd somehow, like, corrected her path in life
07:49 and Balin's like, "You're just as big a loser as everybody else!
07:52 You didn't accomplish anything!"
07:54 In fact, it seems that she, uh, is responsible for getting Sabine's family killed.
08:00 I don't know why all this happened off-camera.
08:02 Maybe we'll have a flashback sequence.
08:04 But that's really a shocker!
08:06 The title of the episode is "Fallen Jedi"
08:08 and we are dealing with a whole lot of broken Jedi.
08:11 Fallen angels, in a way.
08:12 But also, the title works on two levels
08:15 because the whole Order has fallen.
08:17 The whole Jedi Order has fallen because of Order 66.
08:20 So that's actually a really great poetic title.
08:23 We'll see what happens next episode
08:24 where I suspect Ahsoka is having an out-of-body, near-death experience.
08:29 But however she's in the world between worlds
08:31 and however Anakin is manifesting himself
08:34 be it of his own will or if Ahsoka's doing it through her memories...
08:37 It's a little bit like the astral plane, for those of you who are X-Men fans.
08:41 But here, they can literally revisit their past
08:44 and there are doorways, uh, that you can, you know, see through
08:48 and go through--reach through and go through, if you'd like.
08:50 And, by the way, I'd love to know how Balin knows Anakin.
08:53 Maybe that'll be one of the things we explore.
08:55 And Ahsoka, if she wanted to, speaking of the doorways
08:58 she could pull Anakin out of the timeline
09:00 and as I mentioned in a prior breakdown
09:02 maybe have a good Anakin walking around.
09:05 But she'd have to--it would have to be right before he was killed
09:08 and even then, so much has happened, obviously
09:10 that she would destroy the timeline
09:12 although maybe people who don't like the Disney trilogy would rejoice
09:15 but they're not gonna do that.
09:17 But, uh, it's interesting indeed.
09:19 But I would like an answer as to whether or not that's actually Anakin
09:23 or Ahsoka's psyche manifesting him.
09:26 I'm guessing the latter. What do you think?
09:28 And also, some of you might say, "Oh, I don't wanna know.
09:30 Ahsoka would never know for sure."
09:32 But I feel like in a world where you do have Force ghosts
09:35 and, you know, you're supposed to believe that those are actually the individuals
09:38 uh, their souls, and we'll talk about Merrick in a moment
09:41 uh, and, you know, not just manifestations of the people who are seeing them
09:47 you know, psychological manifestations
09:51 I think we need to clarify.
09:53 Okay, next!
09:55 All episode, Ahsoka kept asking Sabine, "Can I trust you?"
09:59 And we got our answer!
10:01 Nope! Oh, and it was glorious.
10:03 See, Ahsoka feels that if they don't get to Thrawn and Ezra first
10:07 to control who comes back and who doesn't
10:09 Heir to the Empire, by the way
10:11 Ahsoka used that line once again
10:14 I believe she used it before in The Mandalorian
10:16 and that's the title of the 1991 book that introduced Thrawn
10:19 So anytime someone says "Heir to the Empire"
10:22 old-school Star Wars fans go "Ooooh!"
10:24 Uh, so Ahsoka feels that if they can't get there first
10:28 to decide who comes back and who doesn't, nobody should.
10:31 So Ahsoka wants to destroy the map
10:34 as Morgan already has the means to get there
10:36 Uh, but Sabine, and I still can't get a read on what her relationship with Ezra is
10:41 Are they romantically involved? Brother and sister?
10:44 I kinda would like some clarification
10:46 But anyway, what do you think?
10:47 'Cause she's, 'cause you know, Balin's like "He's the only family you have left"
10:51 I'm like "What about Zeb and Hera and everybody else?"
10:54 Well, I guess that's the only people who are left
10:56 But, you know, there's still some other people
10:58 I never really felt she and Ezra had that close of a bond
11:01 in Rebels, I felt they never quite connected
11:04 and maybe, maybe that's what it is
11:06 maybe that's interesting, you know, what could've been
11:09 maybe that's the strong thing that's keeping them together
11:11 Oh, I like that
11:13 But anyway, uh, Sabine just can't let go of the possibility of finding Ezra
11:18 So it was shocking when Sabine turned the orb back over to Balin
11:22 But, I mean, it was great for the story
11:24 I was like "Do it, do it!" I was like the Emperor
11:26 I was like "Let the evil grip you!"
11:29 And thankfully, Balin is a gentleman
11:31 whose word does mean something
11:33 He is truly a space knight
11:35 He reminds me a little bit of Ned Stark, by the way
11:37 So, so we'll see what happens to his character down the line
11:41 Ray Stevenson, again, RIP
11:43 Rest in Peace, such a tragic loss
11:45 But what an elegant performance he delivered here
11:48 with such great depth
11:50 He really brought the Game of Thrones vibe to this show
11:53 And, you know, maybe George Lucas was right
11:55 to hire so many older British area actors
11:58 Ray Stevenson hails from Ireland
12:00 But Game of Thrones uses a lot of actors from the same region
12:03 and I'm beginning to think that that's a very, very good idea
12:07 As for Sabine, it really makes you feel differently about her
12:10 Don't you think? Since this is not her first betrayal
12:13 When someone's screaming at you who they are, listen
12:17 Remember, for those of you who don't know
12:20 In Rebels, as I told you before
12:23 She built a weapon for the Empire
12:25 that was eventually used against her own people, the Mandalorians
12:28 I mean, sure, she kind of made good during Rebels
12:31 But, I mean, as good as you can under the circumstances, right?
12:33 There's really no totally coming back from that
12:36 But, that past is there for her
12:39 and now she does it again?
12:40 I mean, who's ever going to trust Sabine after this?
12:43 I mean, I guess it would have to be Ahsoka
12:45 who also apparently isn't trustworthy
12:47 I mean, Ahsoka, speaking of history herself
12:50 has a hard time forgiving people
12:52 so pairing them up is kind of interesting in that regard as well
12:55 But again, it seems she betrayed Sabine by not listening to her
12:58 and got Sabine's whole family killed, who we met in Rebels
13:01 and they were very nice people
13:02 A little intense, but nice
13:04 So maybe they'll feel they're even at this point
13:07 Trust really seems to be their main issue, interestingly enough
13:11 Although Sabine literally let Ahsoka fall in a trust fall
13:14 I'm like, wow, that was so bad
13:17 Then how about Merrick?
13:19 You know, I take notes for
13:21 Usually I don't take notes when I'm watching something
13:23 But when I want to do it in a really timely fashion
13:26 because I don't get it in advance
13:27 I do have to take some notes
13:29 So when Merrick got sliced
13:31 I only briefly saw it
13:33 and I literally said, "Whoa!" out loud
13:35 and rewound
13:36 That's right, I rewound to see it again
13:38 even before I found out he was made out of smoke
13:41 I just couldn't believe Merrick got taken out in Episode 4
13:44 But it turns out he didn't
13:45 I don't think he's dead
13:47 Because it seems that he's not into bondage
13:50 but instead that's some kind of containment suit for his smoke body
13:53 And when Ahsoka ruptured it
13:55 he was dispersed, right?
13:57 So what the heck is he?
13:59 Besides a very obvious nod to Game of Thrones?
14:01 Well, there's something in Star Wars called a smoke demon
14:04 which Sith can summon
14:05 and I'm sure a witch like Morgan can as well
14:07 Did she finally do some witchcraft?
14:09 By the way, she even has the same colors as Melisandre
14:12 come to think of it
14:14 So, again, it's very Game of Thrones
14:16 But I don't care, I loved it
14:18 I think there's a small chance, though
14:20 Merrick could also be a tormented soul
14:22 Maybe Starkiller
14:24 because Merrick and Galen Merrick
14:26 are just way too similar
14:28 And Sam Witwer, who voiced the character
14:30 has refused to say what he's doing on Ahsoka
14:33 So I think it might be the ghost of Merrick, maybe
14:36 his soul
14:38 Either way, I'm sure that Morgan can summon back whatever he is
14:41 And oh boy, that means round three versus Ahsoka
14:44 Also, now that the secret is out
14:46 literally out of the bag
14:48 that he's a smoke demon or something maybe adjacent
14:51 smoke demons have other cool abilities
14:53 that he would then be able to use
14:55 So that would be great
14:56 By the way, did you notice Morgan pull a Doctor Evil
14:59 when she left before the coordinates had been gotten
15:01 just assuming it was all going to go to plan
15:04 That was hilarious
15:06 And wow, that hyperdrive jump was incredible
15:09 I knew Hera brought a lot of red shirts with her
15:12 By the way, one of those red shirts is
15:14 is Brendan Wayne, one of the two stuntmen
15:17 who brings the Mandalorian to life physically
15:19 So that was nice
15:20 Whenever they have cameos in Star Wars
15:22 you know, it might be a director or a writer
15:24 or something like that
15:26 And speaking of the Mandalorian
15:27 it was nice to see Carson, who didn't die
15:30 because he's not a red shirt
15:32 The build-up to the hyperdrive jump was fantastic
15:35 very metropolis
15:36 I thought that was so cool
15:37 And the execution did not disappoint
15:40 Ah, it was so great
15:41 Hera is going to get a visit from Child Services
15:44 Although seeing her and Jason in the cockpit together
15:48 was right out of the final shot of them in Star Wars Rebels
15:50 So that was a nice nod
15:52 I also thought the lightsaber battles
15:54 were the best we've seen on Disney+
15:57 Not quite movie level yet
15:59 The cameras are still too close
16:01 The shot's not long enough
16:03 I'm like, I know why you're jumping back and forth
16:05 between the two fights
16:06 And that's because you're covering
16:08 for the lack of fighting skill of your performers
16:10 I mean, they did all have stunt doubles
16:12 but they're still not where they need to be
16:14 But I think still, particularly for Disney+,
16:16 this was excellent
16:18 And even though the fight choreography
16:20 was lacking a scooch
16:21 I loved how the lightsabers actually flickered here
16:24 Like on Obi-Wan, they looked like giant glow sticks
16:26 But here they flickered!
16:28 And the sound design was perfect
16:30 Ah, loved it!
16:31 Sabine vs Shinhati, round 2
16:34 Again, Mandalorian or Jedi with Sabine
16:37 What the heck is wrong here?
16:39 As soon as she realizes she needs to be both at the same time
16:42 she'll really be a force to be reckoned with
16:45 Ivana Sokno did a great job here though
16:48 as her nemesis
16:49 with some really spectacular line delivery
16:51 Especially "You have no power"
16:54 And then the great Mandalorian punch in the face
16:56 from Sabine is a response
16:58 That was great
16:59 Although I wonder, you know
17:01 There's such... I'm like
17:03 I don't know why Ahsoka isn't like "You're self-doubt"
17:05 It's clearly what is undercutting your force abilities
17:08 Also, I liked when
17:10 Shinhati was cutting down the trees as they fought
17:13 That was great, nice Kylo Ren nod
17:15 But I would have liked to have seen them pick the speed up on that a little bit
17:18 and cut down a whole lot more trees in quick succession
17:20 That would have been much cooler
17:22 As for Ahsoka's two fights
17:24 Her vs Merrick was a bit underwhelming at first
17:26 Another reason I was kinda not totally paying attention
17:29 And you still have not seen what an Inquisitor can really do
17:32 in live action
17:33 If you've seen an Inquisitor in animation
17:35 you know they're much cooler
17:37 But I liked when he tried to overwhelm her with the twirling blades
17:40 making it almost hypnotic
17:41 But yet finally, Ahsoka's low energy paid off
17:44 and she was able to literally cut through that
17:46 I guess there is some logic to Ahsoka's slow and steady calmness
17:50 But wow, it's tough to watch
17:52 I'm like so boring Ahsoka
17:54 I mean the payoffs are nice
17:55 but can we pick up the pace just a little?
17:57 I think that the show needs to compensate for that
18:01 And they did a little bit with this episode which was good
18:04 I also didn't love her fight with Balin
18:07 But oh, I loved the dialogue between the two of them
18:10 I didn't come here to talk about my past
18:12 Well, I'm here to secure the future
18:14 I was like, love it!
18:15 Balin had some great lines overall this episode
18:18 Fear versus experience
18:20 Although I wonder if he's partially referring to maybe
18:22 his experience with Anakin, right?
18:24 Because he knows Ahsoka is Anakin's Padawan
18:28 And then also when he said "Faith"
18:30 I lost that a long time ago
18:32 What a great line for an episode called "Fallen Jedi"
18:35 Also I appreciated the use of force
18:38 of the force during these fights
18:39 You know, moving stuff around
18:41 Although why couldn't Ahsoka use the force to move the orb earlier?
18:45 I would have liked to have seen her to at least try
18:47 So we know that wouldn't work
18:48 I was like, just push that thing out of there!
18:50 But she couldn't, which is why she had to go all Raiders on it
18:54 And listen to this epiphany
18:55 "I bet the map is burned on her hand!"
18:58 "So, Hwang, get over here and read this!"
19:01 Oh, that would be such a great thing
19:02 And it's all Lucasfilm, so it's all good
19:04 I bet that's exactly what they did
19:07 Because of course, Balin destroyed the orb
19:10 Is it still readable if you just have the outside of it?
19:13 Whatever, I'm excited, I bet that's the trick
19:15 On that note, but they don't have a hyperdrive
19:18 So I guess they're just gonna have to wait for them to come back
19:20 They know they're coming back!
19:21 I guess that's, you know, if I were...
19:22 But they don't have to come back to those exact coordinates
19:25 So, interesting
19:26 I guess that's true, they don't have to follow them
19:29 So I guess it doesn't matter
19:30 So it's just, she's just gonna have a cool scar
19:33 And on that note, Hwang versus that assassin droid
19:37 You know, I gotta say, I did love seeing them essentially box
19:41 I was like, "Oh wow, I wouldn't think that droids would go for such old-school fighting technique"
19:45 But I guess that's kind of what made it really interesting to see for a moment
19:49 But I was disappointed that a training droid like Hoi Yang
19:52 Who we saw training with Sabine just last episode
19:56 That he didn't have some better moves
19:58 I imagine him, he's coming to be like Star Wars' version of Alfred Pennyworth
20:02 In my opinion, and I love Alfred
20:04 And Alfred can hold his own in a fight
20:06 So again, I was like a scooch disappointed
20:08 And by the way, when the assassin droid covered Hoi Yang's mouth
20:12 How was that effective?
20:14 Doesn't he have other external speakers?
20:16 Talk about a design flaw
20:17 He's a droid, he doesn't have to talk out of his mouth
20:21 I didn't get that
20:22 And also, with metal covering other metal
20:24 Couldn't really make enough of a seal that the sound wouldn't come out
20:27 I didn't like that
20:29 So we have a pretty great episode 5 ahead of us
20:32 Ahsoka and Anakin
20:34 And what will the other characters find in the new galaxy?
20:36 I guess that's another reason Sabine had to go with them
20:39 So that we had a hero on that journey
20:41 And for someone to look out for Ezra
20:43 So Ezra and Thrawn will obviously be there
20:46 But what does it look like?
20:47 Is it just more space?
20:48 I'm curious to see what they come up with
20:50 I mean space, you know, in Star Wars it's usually just all, you know, black with stars
20:56 But we've seen some amazing pictures of galaxies
21:00 And so it would be nice to maybe bring that to Star Wars
21:03 And now what the heck is Hera gonna do?
21:06 My assumption is go find Ahsoka's body
21:08 Make sure she doesn't die and be there when she wakes up
21:11 So what did you think of episode 4?
21:13 Do you agree that this show is finally reaching Game of Thrones levels?
21:17 And do you think the show can keep this up?
21:19 Because Peter Ramsey isn't directing any more episodes
21:22 Rick Famuyiwa is returning for the finale, episode 8
21:26 But you know, we have, so that means we got a couple episodes to go
21:30 I gotta tell you, I'm a little nervous
21:32 I'm glad Filoni, I mean the fact that Filoni is coming, directing the next episode
21:36 Again makes me feel it's gonna be a good one
21:38 But we know it won't be as visually stunning
