Hi, I'm Laura Reid, the Assistant Features Editor at the Yorkshire Post. I've just come
00:04
on to talk you through some of what's happening in the week ahead.
00:09
The Invictus Games competition is taking place this week. That's the tournament for wounded,
00:14
injured and sick servicemen and women that was set up by the Duke of Sussex back in 2014.
00:21
It aims to shed greater awareness and recognition on these people within society and to support
00:27
their path in rehabilitation. It's taking place this year in Germany for the first time
00:32
in Dusseldorf and it's expected that around 500 competitors will take part from across
00:37
21 nations.
00:41
This week is also National Racehorse Week and training yards, studs and retraining centres
00:46
in Yorkshire and beyond are opening their doors and inviting people to get up and close
00:50
to the racehorses and the teams that look after them. There's more than 130 events,
00:57
a lot of them free, that are taking place nationwide and visitors will have the opportunity
01:02
to do things like watch the horses do various different exercises as well as seeing the
01:08
work of things like farriers and physiotherapists.
01:14
On the theme of animals, in Westminster the annual Westminster Dog of the Year competition
01:19
returns on Thursday in partnership with the Kennel Club and the Dogs Trust. The competition
01:26
is a way for those organisations to engage with parliamentarians who are passionate about
01:30
dogs and identify those who are willing to raise canine issues and policies in parliament.
01:37
It's a celebration of the bond between dogs and their owners and it gives MPs the opportunity
01:42
to highlight the work they're doing on dog-related matters.
01:47
And finally to finish on a food theme, now this is my kind of 10k, the marathon do Malton
01:55
returns on Sunday, that's a foodie themed 10k through the town. People can run, jog
02:02
or walk and there'll be lots of food and drink stops along the way. So the idea is that people
02:09
can enjoy views of the North Yorkshire countryside, sample a range of local offerings from food
02:16
producers in the area and fancy dress is also encouraged.
