controlled substances, the FDA and DEA limit how much of the medicine can be produced each year.
But the increased demand and limited supply have prompted calls for the threshold to be raised.
Earlier this month, the FDA and DEA said
they are "working closely with numerous manufacturers, agencies and others in the supply chain to understand, prevent and reduce the impact of these shortages."
