00:00 The World Health Organization says around 19% of global adult population are affected
00:06 by severe periodontal or gum diseases.
00:09 This represents over a billion cases worldwide.
00:13 What are the symptoms of these and what do we do to keep our gums healthy?
00:17 To tell us, we've got the president and founder of Valeria Doctors Incorporated, Dr. Patricia
00:22 Diana Suiza.
00:23 Hello and good morning, Dr. Patricia, and welcome to New Day.
00:26 Good morning, Dr. Freddy.
00:28 Now, Dr. Suiza, you specialize in periodontics, gum diseases, as well as cosmetic dentistry.
00:33 Let's focus on, let's zoom in on the first aspect, periodontal disease.
00:38 Tell us what exactly is this?
00:40 Okay, I think the first thing that we need to understand is what is periodontology or
00:47 periodontics first.
00:49 It's basically a subspecialty of dental medicine that deals with the supporting structures
00:54 of the teeth.
00:55 So that includes your gums, number one, that's very common with, very familiar to patients.
01:03 We have the alveolar bone, we have the ligaments and the root of the teeth.
01:08 So there are a lot of parts.
01:09 So those four.
01:10 So any disease of the supporting structures of the teeth are considered periodontal disease.
01:15 Now, why is it important?
01:17 A lot of people are aware that we should take care of our teeth, but how important is it
01:21 that we should take care of our gums, too?
01:23 Well, it's basically like putting up a house.
01:27 Before you build a house, you have to know whether your foundations are actually able
01:31 to support the building of the house.
01:35 How is our foundation, our soil?
01:38 Can it support it?
01:39 Is it clean?
01:40 Is it clean?
01:41 Will it last?
01:42 Okay, now in practical sense, Dr. Tricia, for our viewers to know, how does, if we don't
01:48 take care of our gums, how does this affect our day-to-day?
01:52 Like our food, or even when we speak to other people, how does this affect?
01:58 Okay, number one, if you have periodontal diseases, we have to realize that it's basically
02:03 caused by bacteria.
02:04 If you have bacteria in the mouth, there are destructions of the structures, and probably
02:09 our breath is smelly, we have breath odors, so definitely our confidence is affected.
02:16 And then when the periodontal disease progresses, there causes wiggling of the teeth.
02:22 Our teeth move, so it becomes hard for us to actually chew the food.
02:27 So it's affected.
02:29 And then if worse comes to worse, the tooth can fall off.
02:34 So there are patients, sometimes they wonder, "Why I don't have tooth decay, but my teeth
02:38 are wiggling, my teeth are losing, I'm losing my teeth."
02:41 Especially for women who are pregnant, right?
02:44 We hear that a lot.
02:46 So they say it's because of the lack of calcium, but it's actually not because of that.
02:50 Because we have something, what we call pregnancy periodontitis.
02:53 Okay, so that's what we don't want to happen, right?
02:56 The breath odors, the halitosis, the loosening of the teeth.
03:00 Our teeth can also fall off if we don't take care of our gums.
03:03 Now what are some of the risk factors, what we'd like to talk about is the modifiable
03:08 risk factors, the things that people do day-to-day that affect the health of the gums that should
03:13 be changed?
03:14 Okay, the number one thing that should be changed is their oral hygiene practices.
03:18 Most people focus on the cleanliness of the teeth, they don't floss.
03:23 They don't use objects or adjuncts to clean the in-between of the teeth.
03:28 So that's number one.
03:30 Second, diet.
03:31 High sugar diet, definitely, that may cause periodontal diseases.
03:36 The use of toothpicks, sometimes, if improper, it can cause problems.
03:42 So since number one causes bacteria, basically, it's the cleanliness of the mouth.
03:49 So smoking is one of the risk factors as well.
03:53 There are patients also who suffer from periodontal diseases that are very specific to medications,
03:59 caused by medications that they take, like antihypertensive.
04:02 So what it seems like is whatever is good for the teeth, it's also good for our gums.
04:07 So talk to us about what is the best way to take care of our gums as well as our teeth.
04:13 So should we use a toothbrush?
04:16 Should we be meticulous in the type of toothpaste?
04:19 Are all of these important or should we just have that good oral hygiene?
04:23 Well, when you say good oral hygiene, it means that you know how to properly do the cleaning.
04:32 It's not about what you're using.
04:34 But of course, you ask, "What's the best?
04:36 Is it soft, medium, or hard?"
04:38 Well, soft is the best because it doesn't really scrape off the surface of the enamel.
04:43 So it's the safest for our gums and teeth.
04:47 Circular motion, two to three times a day, and then, of course, flossing is very important.
04:52 Okay, so the flossing is very good because a lot of people just focus on brushing their
04:56 teeth but they don't focus on how important flossing is for that as well.
05:01 So if people have any questions about their gums, their teeth, where should they go?
05:06 They can go to Valeria Doctors' Premium Medical and Dental Aesthetics.
05:10 It's actually located in Sirimundo, Pasig.
05:13 Okay.
05:14 Thank you so much for sharing your information with us, Dr. Rosha, and I'm sure a lot of
05:18 our viewers know better now on how to take care of their teeth and get their gums.
05:22 Thank you so much, Dr. Eddie.
