00:00 - New numbers from the CDC show one in five women report
00:03 being mistreated during pregnancy and childbirth.
00:06 And it's much worse for women of color.
00:09 CBS 2's Jessica Moore spoke with a mother who knows
00:11 that pain all too well and explains what health care
00:14 leaders say needs to be done.
00:17 - Being ignored and overlooked, and it just felt like...
00:22 no one cared.
00:23 - Jay Mitchell knew the statistics of maternal
00:25 mistreatment among Black women, which is why she opted
00:28 for a home birth in 2021.
00:30 But when that didn't work out and she had to go to the
00:32 hospital in the middle of labor, things got even worse.
00:35 - It took a long time for them to get someone to me.
00:40 I had a doula.
00:41 She was there advocating for me because I was pretty much
00:45 unable to speak for myself.
00:47 And they were very nasty with her.
00:49 There are security guards in the room while my legs are,
00:52 like, completely open.
00:54 - As we've reported, a woman's race and wealth appear to play
00:57 significant roles in who is treated well and who isn't.

01:03 Today, the CDC is sounding the alarm, saying one in five
01:06 women report being mistreated during pregnancy and delivery.
01:09 Black women reported the highest rates of mistreatment,
01:12 with 30% saying they weren't treated well.
01:15 29% of Hispanic women also reported being mistreated.
01:19 - We're talking about receiving no response to requests for
01:22 help, being shouted at, not having their physical privacy
01:26 protected.
01:27 - Expectant mothers without insurance and those with public
01:30 insurance, like Medicaid, also reported high rates
01:33 of mistreatment.
01:34 These disparities in care can lead to catastrophic outcomes
01:37 for moms and babies.
01:39 But according to the CDC, more than 80% of pregnancy-related
01:43 complications and deaths are preventable.
01:45 Today, the agency proposed hospitals and OB-GYN offices
01:49 hire a diverse workforce, require staff to undergo
01:53 unconscious bias training, and support doulas and midwives.
01:57 Rachel's daughter Aurora is now a happy, healthy two-year-old,
02:00 but she knows all moms aren't as lucky.
02:03 She hopes the CDC follows through to ensure every mother
02:06 is respected as she brings new life into the world.
02:10 Jessica Moore, CBS 2 News.
02:12 - According to the CDC, more than 1,200 women died in child
02:16 birth in 2021, and the agency says that implementing its
02:20 suggested changes will likely reduce that number drastically.
