Hawaii Governor Slams Emergency Response
Hawaii Governor Josh Green expressed his dissatisfaction with the response to a wildfire in Maui's Lahaina area, criticizing the former emergency chief's handling of the situation. Green wished that sirens had been used to alert residents to evacuate as the fire rapidly spread, but acknowledged the historical use of sirens primarily for tsunamis. Herman Andaya, the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, resigned due to criticism of not activating sirens during the wildfire. Andaya had cited concerns that activating sirens might cause people to move toward the fire. Instead, alerts were sent via text, TV, and radio, but power outages in the area resulted in many residents not receiving those alerts. The wildfires led to hundreds of fatalities and missing individuals, with Green emphasizing the challenges of identifying remains and possible child victims. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
