It Will Be Nice If Punjab Kings Can Win Next Two Games, That's Under Our Control: Jonny Bairstow

  • last year
Blistering half-centuries by Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow earned Punjab Kings a crucial 54-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League in Mumbai on Friday. The big win lifted PBKS to sixth and still in the race for a top-four place in the playoffs with two league games to go. RCB barely hung to fourth place after their fourth loss in six IPL 2022 games. 00:19 Johnny, congratulations on your victory and your performance.
00:23 My question is that we saw a completely different intent of Punjab Kings team today.
00:28 Was it your plan just to play attacking cricket against RCB?
00:32 No, that's been generally the ethos of how we've tried to go about all of the tournament.
00:38 That's been the way in which the guys have wanted to try and go about the process of the game.
00:45 You'll have noticed sometimes that we've lost wickets in clusters through the middle,
00:48 which has then stifled our progress on from there.
00:51 But, yeah, I think on the whole, that was the way that we wanted to try and go about it
00:56 for the majority of the tournament.
00:58 Like I mentioned and alluded to, it doesn't happen all the time.
01:00 But if we can do that more often than not, then hopefully when a couple of people stand up,
01:06 we're able to get that job done.
01:08 I just wanted to ask, with this being some must-win game for you and coming to the end of the tournament,
01:13 are there any more plans as such to get big wins and comprehensive wins,
01:17 considering the next 100 will come into play eventually?
01:21 I think just winning the next two would be nice.
01:23 I think that's the only thing that we can control at this moment in time,
01:26 and then we have to go on from there.
01:30 If we don't win two games, no matter what our run rate is,
01:32 then we don't potentially pass through into the knockout stage of the competition.
01:40 So there are no grand plans.
01:42 I'm sorry to disappoint you on that front.
01:45 The plans are that we have to get two wins in the next two games.
01:48 We've done it today, but we haven't done it back-to-back in this competition enough when we should have done.
01:55 That's where we stand.
01:57 We need to win the next two in order to pass through into the latter stage of the competition,
02:02 and that's what we'll be trying to do.
02:04 If the run rate comes into it, then we'll take that into account as and when the games come.
02:10 But first and foremost, we need to win those two games.
