00:00 What is the role of Bihan in improving nutrition outcomes?
00:05 Bihan is a holistic and overarching flagship program of Government of India,
00:12 which aims at improving nutrition outcomes.
00:15 The program comprises of nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions.
00:21 Nutrition-sensitive interventions help in stabilizing the nutrition-specific interventions.
00:30 The sensitive interventions would include education, health, immunization, agriculture, water, sanitation,
00:41 and a whole lot of interventions which help in social and behavior change communication.
00:48 So this is aimed at reaching the last mile connectivity with all children, pregnant women, and lactating women.
00:57 Dietary diversity is a very important thing in improving the nutrition outcomes.
01:04 It has been recorded that only one in seven child receives a minimum acceptable diet,
01:10 which means both in terms of nutrition adequacy and frequency.
01:16 So there are eight to nine food groups, and it would be important to include at least five to six food groups in the diet.
01:25 And for that, I recommend that the cereals should also contain the millets,
01:33 which are very rich in nutrition and powerhouse of nutrition, and they are rich in micronutrients.
01:40 Apart from that, pulses, legumes, milk products, animal protein, and protective foods like fruits and vegetables, all these are important.
01:52 The theme that has been given by WHO for this year is One Health, One Planet.
01:59 It is important that until everybody is safe, nobody is safe.
02:05 The planet has to survive, and for that it is important that we maintain the external ecosystem,
02:14 that is the forests and animal habitat, and also at the same time protect ourselves.
02:23 COVID showed us that the transmission of virus from animals to human beings happened,
02:32 and therefore we have to keep up our immunity levels.
02:37 And for that, I strongly recommend that millets are a powerhouse of nutrition,
02:43 and the micronutrients, which basically are immune nutrients also,
02:49 they help a long way in keeping us in a healthy state so that we do not fall a victim for various diseases.
03:00 The government of India in 2018 declared millets as nutricereals, and they also made a national millet mission.
03:12 After that, in the UN General Assembly, millet's proposal was moved by India, and it was supported by 60 countries,
03:24 and FAO has now declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
03:32 The program that RAKIT is running, Reach Each Child, it has the importance of 1000 days,
03:40 which is paramount, and it is targeted during this period.
03:46 The idea is that while we are promoting breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely complementary feeding,
03:56 it is also the mandate that dietary diversity in the form of having energy-rich food,
04:06 having micronutrient-rich food, having protective foods like vegetables and fruits,
04:15 they have also started with kitchen gardens in the households and also in the Anganwadis.
04:23 And these have proven to be a very good success in driving the hot cooked meal program,
04:33 and also bringing about a social and behavior change, including community mobilization,
04:42 so that people adopt the dietary diversity.
04:47 Outlook Potion 2.0 is a very ambitious program, which has been launched by Outlook to improve the last mile connectivity,
04:59 and reaching the unreached.
05:02 There are large number of children and nomadic tribes who are living on the fringes,
05:10 and it is very important that such an effort, which has been taken by Outlook Potion 2.0, will certainly bridge that gap.
