A local architect has succeeded in getting a Victorian goods shed listed. It's one of only a few hundred in the country that still survive, and was threatened with demolition when the council sold it last year. Tony Johnson speaks to Geremy Britton.

Hi, I'm Jeremy Dixon and Associates, we're an architectural consultant based in Bridlington.
00:06
Recently we saw a property, this one behind me, come up for sale by Striden of Yorkshire
00:11
Council and as I'm in the property business I had a read and I noticed in there that they're
00:18
actually looking at potentially supporting the demolition of this building as part of
00:23
the sale of that land and that's just something that didn't quite resonate right with me and
00:29
it seemed to be that there was no policy protection for the building, it wasn't listed, it wasn't
00:34
in any conservation area and therefore I thought to myself that we should put this in for a
00:41
listed building application to potentially list it.
00:45
Not something that we've done before but we put something together, we sent it off to
00:49
Heritage England and just over a year later, the timescale was really quite something,
00:56
they actually came back and said that this building can be listed, it's 180 years old
01:01
and they dated it to the 1840s, it's had a number of uses over the years, obviously built
01:07
as a goods shed and obviously now it was threatened with demolition as part of the sale by Striden
01:13
of Yorkshire Council.
01:15
We had no idea the potential use of the site going forward and we're very concerned that
01:20
it would be demolished and the loss of that building to this particular area, right in
01:25
front of Bridlington train station, it would be really a cry in shame.
01:31
So as I say, coming back to a whole year of waiting, it was finally granted just last
01:35
week Grade 2 listed status and that will mean that the building will now be conserved and
01:41
it will mean that any further changes to it will be closely monitored by East Striden
01:45
of Yorkshire Council so it does get the protection that it deserved and hopefully I'm looking
01:50
forward to seeing how it's going to transform.
