00:00Very sadly knife crime continues to be an awful blight on local communities
00:04leaving people completely devastated by the census loss of young lives. We would
00:09like to express our huge sympathies for family and friends of Harvey Wilders who
00:14was killed whilst attending a Sheffield school in a stabbing attack by the
00:17defendant. We hope that these guilty verdicts bring some comfort to Harvey's
00:22family with justices we serve today. The Crown Prosecution Service in South Yorkshire
00:28Police were able to prove that the defendant did not lose self-control but
00:33intended to deliberately attack 15 year old Harvey. We remind young people there
00:39can be horrendous and serious consequences of carrying knives. It has been proven
00:44that if you carry these weapons you are more likely to use them or to become a
00:49victim of knife crime. You are putting yourself, other people and your future at
00:54risk. Please stop carrying knives and putting mines in danger.
00:59Good afternoon. I'm Detective Inspector Joe Hackworthy, Deputy Senior
01:14Investigating Officer for the investigation to Harvey Wilders' murder. This trial has been a
01:21heartbreaking reminder of the devastation of knife crime causes in our communities. It tears lives and families apart and that has never been more
01:29evident than in this tragic case. Tonight, one boy's family will be spending
01:34another night grieving the unimaginable loss of their beloved son, while another
01:39boy's family will be living with the reality that their son faces a life sentence
01:43behind bars for murder. Our thoughts today of all those who knew and loved Harvey,
01:48especially his family, who have had to endure a lengthy trial because of the
01:54murderous refusal to admit the full extent of what he did on that tragic day in February.
01:58They have shown immense courage throughout the court process and I want to
02:03thank them for it. The boy who's been found guilty of Harvey's murder thought
02:08carrying a knife would offer him protection, changed the way his peers looked at him. He
02:13might even have wanted them to fear him. But the painful reality is that his
02:18decision led to him taking an innocent life, tearing the life of two families
02:22apart about to land in prison. It's important we all try to change attitudes towards
02:29violence, carrying weapons and we can all play a part in tackling knife crime. I am
02:35mindful that South Yorkshire's young people are currently on their summer holidays and
02:39may have been left feeling frightened or anxious following Harvey's death and the
02:43subsequent criminal justice proceedings. If you are a parent or carer and suspect
02:48your child is carrying a knife or may be feeling under pressure to carry one, please have an
02:54open and honest conversation with them. It's also important you encourage them to
02:59tell someone they trust. They believe one of their friends, somebody they know, is
03:04carrying a weapon. Thank you.
