A head for heights: Tulketh Mill chimney restoration

City Group Managed Services have been awarded a prestigious contract to provide high-level restoration and repair work to Tulketh Mill in Preston, as part of the ongoing preservation of the landmark.

00:59 - What we've got here is Tulketh Mill.

01:08 It was originally a cotton mill built 120 years ago

01:12 after the cotton mill closed down,

01:14 it went into a period of neglect.

01:16 Was bought again in early 2004 and been developed then since.

01:24 We've got a chimney here.

01:33 It's a requirement to have a two year inspection

01:36 of the chimney for the condition report.

01:38 And on the last condition report,

01:40 we noticed some deterioration in the restraining bands

01:44 that are kind of like a cooper's barrel

01:47 that go around to keep the chimney's integrity intact.

01:52 The moment it stands at 56 meters,

01:59 it was reduced many years ago from taller,

02:03 but it's currently 56 to the summit.

02:10 The team are from a company called Raffertys

02:17 that are based in Stoke-on-Trent.

02:19 We went to a number of contractors for their specification

02:24 on how they do the job and their prices,

02:26 and it was awarded to these guys.

02:30 The first thing they did was put the ladders up

02:33 to this aspect that you can see behind me.

02:35 They then go up, they had a crane arrive,

02:39 they've put like a crow's nest scaffold around the top,

02:41 and from there, they're using two mobile cranes

02:44 to then lower themselves and to get to the correct height.

02:50 What we've done is we've removed the 20 restraining bands,

02:59 and what we're going to do is replace them

03:01 with brand new bespoke made restraining bands.

03:05 While we're there,

03:06 while we've got the access equipment in place,

03:08 we're going to repoint the top 20 meters of the chimney.

03:11 The health and safety is fantastic with these guys.

03:15 They've got double harnesses.

03:16 Everything's well taken care of.
