Irish music legend Sinead O'Connor has sadly died at the age of 56. Her family confirmed the death in a statement to the BBC on Wednesday.

00:09 "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead.
00:13 Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.
00:18 No further details were released."
00:20 The singer topped the charts and rose to international success with the Prince-written
00:25 hit "Nothing Compares to You" in 1990. O'Connor had a complicated and controversial music career
00:35 speaking openly about politics, spirituality and mental health struggles.
00:40 She famously ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live in 1992
00:45 and objected to the national anthem being played at her concerts,
00:49 which caused some radio stations to ban her music.
00:52 She released her debut album The Lion and the Cobra in 1987 and followed it up with
00:57 1990's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. Its lead single "Nothing Compares to You"
01:02 helped O'Connor earn four Grammy nominations for the song and album.
01:06 However, the singer withdrew from the competition. O'Connor released 10 albums.
01:11 Her last full-length release was 2014's I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss.
