In the wake of the ongoing violence between the Kuki tribe and Meitei community in Manipur, Asha Bala, a prominent lawyer and political activist, has expressed her concerns about the inability of the state government to restore peace. In an interview with Chitrita Sanyal (political editor), Bala highlighted the crucial role of disarmament in bringing about lasting peace in the troubled region.

Bala began by acknowledging the severity and duration of the conflict, which has plagued Manipur for the past two months. The clashes between the Kuki tribe and Meitei community have resulted in numerous casualties, mass displacement, and a palpable sense of fear and instability among the residents. Bala emphasized the urgent need for intervention to address the root causes of the violence and prevent further escalation.

According to Bala, the inability of the state government to restore peace in Manipur stems from its failure to address the underlying issue of widespread gun ownership among the populace. She argued that a sustainable resolution to the conflict will remain elusive unless the government takes decisive steps to encourage people to surrender their weapons.
