The National Health service (NHS) turns 75 years old tomorrow (July 5). When it was founded in 1948, the NHS was the first universal health care system which was available to everyone and free at the point of delivery, and tomorrow it will be celebrated by staff and patients across the country. There are many ways to get involved in the event programme and a special service will be held for NHS staff, volunteers and partners at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Wednesday July 5. The NHS treats over a million people a day in England and has delivered some of the world's biggest medical advances, including the first CT scan on a patient in 1971, the first liver, heart and lung transplant in 1987 - and more recently - the world's first rapid whole genome sequencing service for seriously ill babies and children. We asked local people their thoughts on our National Health Service as we celebrate its 75th anniversary.
