This the moment police officers rescued a dog trapped in a canal using freshly-baked pumpkin muffins as bait.

The German Shepherd was rescued by officers from Glendale Police department in Arizona, USA, after they received a call from a concerned neighbour.

Officers Sorenson and Downey arrived to the scene and found the exhausted pooch paddling in the canal with no way to get out.

A video released by Glendale Police Department shows the tired dog paddling in the canal back and forth as police officers try to get the animal to approach.

The dog was nervous and would not let the officers get close.

But luckily one of them had brought a packed lunch with pumpkin muffins.

The officers used the muffins as a bait and managed pull the pooch out of the canal.

Glendale PD said on twitter: "The dog was skittish and did not immediately come to Officer Sorensen, but Officer Downey had just the plan.

"His wife had packed him some freshly baked pumpkin muffins for his patrol shift, and they were just the bribery needed for this little pooch.

"Gratefully, the dog was reunited with his owner who lived just down the street. Great work by our patrol officers!"

The rescue attempt only took around five minutes and the dog was quickly returned to its very grateful owner.
