On May 21, 1932 US aviator Amelia Earhart landed in a farmer's field in Ballyarnett in Derry city, Ireland in her bright red Lockheed Vega plane and made history when she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She had set off from Newfoundland, Canada 15 hours earlier hoping to reach Paris.
