00:30Greetings and welcome! East Hampton, South Hampton, Amagansett, and community. Welcome
00:51and thank you for tuning in to Cafe with Sandra Kay. Today we have a truly exciting show in
00:59store for you. We are standing in the sand dunes off the shores of Amagansett where a
01:06ship mast was discovered by local resident Joel Kelsey, a bow and arrow hunter. Today
01:16Joel and our very own Digger Brad are here to help search for additional artifacts surrounding
01:24this ship mast so we can discover where this ship came from, how old the ship is, the size
01:34of the ship, what period of time it came from, and was this a merchant ship? Was this a pirate
01:41ship? What brought this ship here? Was there a fire? Were there hurricanes and storms or
01:51was it warfare? We're going to take a look at this incredible find and see what we can uncover.
01:58Let's go to it!
02:21You rode it away, you know what I mean?
02:51Yeah, normally when a mast starts up on the ship, that means that we know that there was a shipwreck out there.
03:07This is a great story. When we were in the Bahamas, we had a really bad storm and apparently some kittens came up to the beach.
03:18And I realized that as soon as I saw the kittens, that they were apparently from a ship that sank in the 1700s.
03:26Because it had the wine on it, it had the crown on it, and it had key marks. And I looked them up and I said,
03:34here's maybe some of the other kittens. And so they were just amazed at my knowledge. They were just like, is that so?
03:43The thing is too, it was a weird day on the beach. Everything was in layers. Whatever happened storm-wise that did this,
03:58there was lighter garbage layered in one part, then there was a different type of heavier garbage. Everything got sifted out naturally.
04:07It was like it naturally got sifted. Once that happened, I did find a bunch of little pieces of wood that were obviously old.
04:17Smaller pieces of steel and other stuff like that. But I was thinking, once the water gets a little bit warmer,
04:22I'll throw a wetsuit on and maybe dive the area around there too to see if there's anything on the bottom.
05:06That's where the water came through.
05:36I looked up a really old vest, what they used to tighten them and stuff back in the day.
05:51A picture with the same exact clasps came up in the same market.
05:56That's got to be like 12 feet, right?
05:59Big, right?
06:00Bigger, I think.
06:03We'll see when we really get close to it.
06:06There's nails and stuff in it.
06:08What?
06:09I bet there's stuff around it.
06:11There has to be.
06:14I mean, he's going to have a blast doing this.
06:17Yeah.
06:19This is so cool.
06:22Wow.
06:23These are solid cast iron steel.
06:25Yeah.
06:28Wow.
06:33Yeah, this was the center of a huge...
06:37Super hole.
06:44This is what held it together.
06:47Wow, it must have been such a big ship.
06:52Like 75 feet long or something.
06:55These are wooden pegs.
06:57Oh, wow.
06:58Yeah, they are.
06:59These, too.
07:00Those are wooden pegs that are driven in by hand.
07:03So this is a wooden peg.
07:05The bottom of them is pretty rusted away.
07:08You could take a sample to dig it if you wanted to.
07:11Like just a piece of this.
07:12Right.
07:14That's awesome.
07:15Wow.
07:16I really could tell that it was something by, especially these clasps.
07:20And then once I saw that these wooden pegs were in there, and I found a couple round nails.
07:25I can't believe the pegs survived.
07:27Yeah, I can't believe this.
07:29What is in here?
07:30That's metal.
07:31That's metal.
07:33Cast iron steel, I think.
07:55We have Digger Brad with us with metal detecting to see if we can find artifacts.
08:24We have Joel, Kelsey, who is responsible for finding this ship mast.
08:29And we're all going to discuss and look at the artifacts and try to determine when this ship came from, where, and how.
08:37So let's get to the discovery.
08:44For those who don't know me, I'm Digger Brad, a.k.a. known as Brad Voxel.
08:51Thank you for having me, Cedric K., Joel, Jody, and LTV.
08:57This man right over here, Joel, found this amazing actual spot we're going to.
09:04And I believe that the ship is definitely probably 1700s to 1800s.
09:12The reason why is because of the length of it.
09:17It's definitely not the log sitting on the beach.
09:22So when I first saw the picture, I was very impressed with the find from Joel, and I have to give him that props.
09:32Thank you, sir.
09:33Because if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here.
09:43This is the ship.
09:46This is the ship.
09:48This is the ship.
09:50This is the ship.
09:52This is the ship.
09:54This is the ship.
09:56This is the ship.
09:58This is the ship.
10:00This is the ship.
10:02This is the ship.
10:04This is the ship.
10:06This is the ship.
10:12This is the ship.
10:14This is the ship.
10:16This is the ship.
10:18This is the ship.
10:21This is the ship.
10:24This is the ship.
10:26This is the ship.
10:28Now, Joel, you made this incredible discovery, which we're going to take a look at pretty shortly.
10:34Yes.
10:35a ship mast. Tell us when did you discover it and I know you mentioned you were also with a friend.
10:41When did you discover it and what did you think? So about a few months ago,
10:48maybe two or three, me and my buddy Patrick were cruising around walking his dogs.
10:54One of those little guys took off, a golden house, took off. Next thing you know we end up here.
10:59Okay. So we started looking for him and then he's like, oh it's that random looking log over there.
11:03I'm like that ain't no log dude. Wow. Got a little bit closer. Next thing you know you realize there's
11:08some really old steel on there and obviously. So you knew right away. Well I knew right away because
11:14I'm always looking for things like that. It's just naturally in me. I've been doing it since
11:17I was younger but I noticed the new wall and I noticed that recently there was a storm. I knew
11:24that obviously because I live here. Sure. So there was a big storm and then I could see that right
11:28here was cut out. You can see up there it's still like that. Yeah. But it was carved down like that
11:34all the way to the bottom here. So when I saw that I was like that was obviously washed up.
11:40I mean uncovered. Sure. Uncovered recently. So you know. How big would you say that is?
11:48I'd go with about 26 feet long. That's incredible. And you know you can tell it was preserved the
11:55way it was because you can see the sand built up upon it and then the clasps around it. Sure.
12:00Were just sitting on top and there was one that wasn't even you know the the rest of it was just
12:05completely rusted away. It was just perfectly sitting on top. Like a strong gust of wind could
12:09have pushed it. So I knew that it recently came from underneath the sand. It was washed. And do
12:14we know what those clasps were made of? I would say I mean Brad probably has a better answer for that.
12:20But I would say you know cast iron steel. Okay. Probably a few millimeters thick.
12:27Well we're going to meet Digger Brad now. He's going to help us with Joel
12:31in discovering some more artifacts. Tell us more about this ship.
12:38So just to mount right of threshold.
12:45There's a lot of iron.
12:51Oh wow. What is it? It's an old light bulb. I don't know why. Hold on. That's crazy. Yeah.
13:13So Brad like what year would this be from would you guess? 1900s. Okay. Wow. Yeah
13:20very neat. Well as you know the east coast is a very very big one key part of of our history
13:36here and also during the American Revolutionary War and Civil War. A lot of times this was the
13:42key port for goods. They brought a lot of stuff into town. Montauk was also a key part for goods.
13:49But the key part for the history and culture here is that it was the only port at the time to
13:56America. All the way from Maine to Florida was the only way they can get in and out of
14:01of the east coast of America. Do we think that this mast has been floating? Yes. For a hundred
14:08years? Or more at least. Yes because it's not because when I see this directly I mean I'm
14:15looking at it and when I see it there's no possible way for that to be like that. So a lot
14:21of times you would have lanterns that became fake lights. Became you know right people trying to
14:29take your ship trying to take you know your life. You're talking spices, metals. Everything. Spices,
14:34metals, clothing, money, jewelry, you know your gold, your silver, your bronze, your copper,
14:42and... Or you got the other homies that come for their plunder. Exactly, yeah.
14:48Yes, that's what mother's hunting is all about. If this was a merchant ship was it taken over by
14:54the pirates? Who knows? I don't know. Was it the 1800s? I think definitely definitely around there
15:0017-1800s. When you see stuff like that to me that's just not an ordinary piece of wood.
15:08Definitely not. We're all here together right now. We're all here together because our ancestors
15:13came to this country to start a new life. What this is made of? The clasp? Is that copper?
15:22It's iron or steel. It's iron or steel. So that would indicate that it came from a little later
15:27period right? If it was iron or steel. You know I mean 1800s as opposed to 1700s. Yes because 1700s
15:33a lot of this would be a lot more thinner right? And do we think the ship, I mean this is obviously
15:38wood, do you think that the ship was made of wood? Yes, I think that it's made of wood because there
15:44was no way that it would have been like this. This the only way it might have been made was definitely
15:53yeah definitely absolutely oh yeah. So is that like a hole for a nail or something? Yes because
16:01is this pegs? Yes definitely pegs because you can see here that this was definitely
16:08um that that was definitely not made I mean it was definitely man-made but you know nobody
16:15used a driller or anything to do that because you can definitely see the grooves here
16:19and then this is definitely um yeah that's a lot harder and it's a lot um thicker so definitely
16:29I'm gonna put it between uh 1800s to 1900. Okay. Because of the because of the way of the
16:36of the actual band itself and the way it feels and then how heavy it is um it's definitely not
16:421700s because this would have been a lot more thinner and and a lot more um a lot more breakable
16:50so when things get like this and it's hard and you know from the sun and everything it's just nice.
16:56It doesn't get started to degrade anymore after it was exposed? Yes everything starts to degrade
17:00after it exposes because the sun gets heat and a lot of times you know. And Joel you said you
17:04found this how many months ago would you say? I gotta say there's a bit of snow on the ground.
17:09Oh wow several months ago. More than a few I think. Okay all right so it's going to keep
17:15deteriorating. Not this much of it was exposed then it got recovered back up again just the
17:20back end of it at least you know it was more exposed and then the wind shifted and brought
17:23more sand around it obviously now that I'm looking at it in the back end at least or front
17:27I can't really tell to be honest but that looks thicker towards this end so I'm guessing that
17:30that was where whatever happened was broke or however yeah there's another peg right in front
17:35of you I think yeah yeah yeah that's another wow that's iron which is very cool this puppy right
17:42here yeah that is that looks like it was like hand driven in I think yes definitely oh yeah
17:48you can tell that was basically made from the same type of wood definitely yeah oh yeah
17:56yeah Jordy if you can just get it yeah I just wanted to show the kind of different shape that
18:01it made it's yeah normally this would not be normally this would just sit down like that
18:08but for that to be in there that definitely tells me that it's definitely a ship because
18:13when you find pegs like this you know that you're definitely a shipwreck because there's no way
18:18that it could have been from a house or anything because this would not be looking like this yeah
18:25I wonder how many clasps I mean we see two yeah but the interesting part is that it's
18:31where that there might have been another there was another class right there now would this be
18:37indicative of another potential class no that might have been part of the actual ship okay
18:43yeah because they would have to drove in the spikes and then that would actually
18:46that would probably probably have to nail it somehow yeah and then that would definitely be
18:53somehow because they would definitely for me it's like they would definitely have the things here
18:58along the lines but then somehow in order to keep the wood they would have to use both iron and
19:05so we think there are at least three masks three masks probably yes because this
19:09wood doesn't split like this why is it split down the middle that's what I was worried
19:26because most of the times when you find shipwrecks the boards actually kind of tell you but
19:32this wood right here with the split like this there's it definitely might have hit something
19:36really hard when it came down and probably like something or rock or might it might have just been
19:43like that yeah just ripped right open just ripped totally right open because there's no way
19:48there's no way that this was done by human or anything like that
19:55yeah we got uh iron class iron steel we know we've got a wood ship we know we have at least
20:02three masks and we think it may have been a storm or a hurricane I mean that or they just hit shore
20:10but like look they got the wooden pegs driven straight in there's one there there's an old one
20:14here check that out that's all that's driven in that's barely in there I don't even want to mess
20:19with it you know I mean see how loose it is but you can tell that's driven in yeah it's all hand
20:23driven in there's another peg right there yeah there it is the other peg back in the day you
20:29know it's just climbing up there twine it real quick
20:59so
