00:00 Before God and my family, I'm announcing I'm running for President of the United States.
00:05 We can bring this country back. We can defend our nation and secure our border. We can revive
00:10 our economy and put our nation back on a path to a balanced budget, defend our liberties
00:15 and give America a new beginning for life."
00:18 With those words, Mike Pence set himself up for a dramatic showdown with his old boss.
00:23 For the first time in its modern history, a former US Vice President is now running
00:28 for the White House against a President he served under.
00:32 In the campaign launch video posted to his Twitter account, the former Indiana Governor
00:37 never mentioned Donald Trump by name, but signaled he would be a better fit for the
00:41 job.
00:42 "We can turn this country around, but different times call for different leadership. Today
00:48 our party and our country need a leader that will appeal, as Lincoln said, to the better
00:52 angels of our nature."
00:54 After announcements from former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and current North
00:59 Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, the number of candidates running for the Republican nomination
01:04 is now in the double digits.
01:06 Mike Pence has a mountain to climb if he hopes to beat out the competition.
01:11 Those critical of Donald Trump see him as complicit in spreading his lies, and those
01:15 supportive of him see Pence as a traitor for not overturning the 2020 election result.
01:22 Last month, a CNN poll showed 45% of Republican-leaning independents wouldn't vote for Pence under
01:28 any circumstance.
01:30 And that number seems to be haunting Mike Pence. It's coincidentally the same amount
01:35 he's lagging behind the frontrunner, his former boss Donald Trump.
