Glasgow headlines 1 June: LEZ has officially come into force
  • 11 months ago
Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone is now officially in force and the most polluting vehicles are no longer permitted access to travel through the city centre.

The new scheme is intended to tackle harmful air pollution, and follows the initial bus-only phase which has seen year-on-year improvement in air quality since 2018.

Vehicles that do not meet criteria but proceed to enter the zone will be subjected to fines.

Next up, a council report looking into the future of the city centre has suggested Buchanan Street needs more food and drink venues following feedback which revealed it can feel “unsafe” and “dead” at night.

The report also said that Sauchiehall Street could benefit from a park and that there is also support to transform it into a “cultural quarter”.

And in other news, the MP for Glasgow Central has shared her belief that football clubs should organise their own fan celebrations after a recent gathering in Trongate left streets filled with rubbish.

Alison Thewliss said that clubs should be billed for clean-up costs which are currently undertaken by the council, following Celtic’s premiership win.
