Manchester gathers to watch the Coronation of King Charles III at city landmarks Manchester Cathedral and Piccadilly Gardens
  • last year
The first coronation of a British monarch in 70 years has taken place today (May 6).

King Charles III has been crowned the reigning monarch at a service at Westminster Abbey on May 6, almost seven decades after his mother Queen Elizabeth II had her coronation on June 2 1953.

Local people flocked to Manchester landmarks to witness this historic event.

Manchester Cathedral opened its doors after morning service at 9.30am and welcomed locals and visitors from around the world - including an American woman who flew all the way from Minnesota to be here for the celebrations.

Manchester City Council set up screens in Piccadilly Gardens for people to gather together and soak up the atmosphere with some food and drink.

We went down to talk to people ahead of the Coronation ceremony.
