Warnings issued as snow possible across the UK
  • last year
Arctic air is forecasted to cause snow, cold winds, and icy conditions in some parts of the UK during the upcoming week. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for parts of north-east Scotland and England Up to 20cm of snow could fall on high ground, and up to 10cm is possible in low-lying areas, causing disruptions to travel and day-to-day activities.

The warning area will extend to more parts of Scotland and north-east England, including Newcastle upon Tyne and Yorkshire on Monday, and further to Strathclyde, more of Yorkshire and the Humber, and the East Midlands on Tuesday, where frequent snow is expected.

The Met Office warned of the risk of delays on roads, rail and plane cancellations, slips, and falls on icy surfaces, with rural communities being cut off and cuts to power and phone services being possible. The middle of the week is less certain as warmer air from the Atlantic is expected to create challenging conditions over the UK, potentially bringing snow to more southern parts of England, or some much-needed rain.

The UK Health Security Agency issued earlier alerts that all of England is likely to experience cold weather for much of next week, which could have a "serious impact" on vulnerable individuals' health. The agency advised people to check on their relatives and over-65s or those with pre-existing medical conditions to heat their homes to at least 18C.
